I’m really enjoying whale rider so far! The relationship between Pai and Hemi is profound. They are both young kids trying to figure out their role in the Māori community. #AMIND435

I have really enjoyed watching the nuanced perspective that the ethnographic films capture. #AMIND435

It’s crazy to think in the beginning of the semester we watched so many westerns. As we approach the end we get to watch films made by indigenous people. #AMIND435

It was super interesting to place the films boy and rhymes for ghouls in perspective. Like the professor mentioned they aim to discuss inter generation issues. However, they have drastically different ways in approaching the subject. #AMIND435

The previous lecturer that discussed rhymes for ghouls was great. Her ideas helped me understand the film better. #AMIND435

I enjoyed the guest lecture from the San Diego State Alumi! She was insightful and unapologetic about her message. #AMIND435

The film boy was such a beautiful movie. I loved the authenticity of the characters flaws. I enjoyed the contrast of personalities between the 2 brother #AMIND435

I personally do not like to watch horror films. However, I can appreciate Rhymes for Young Ghouls. The layers of complexities in the film is what makes it impactful. The story that is told commands attention and a response. Which I believe makes it an influential film. #AMIND435

I was not expecting that plot twist in Frozen River. The idea of borders was so prevalent in the first part of the movie. A particular scene that stood out was the no trespassing sign. #AMIND435

The idea about counterculture reinforcing the noble savage expectation was clearly depicted in Billy Jack. It also clearly shows the ignorance of those who appropriated Native Culture. #AMIND435

I’ve seen Jimmy Stewart before in “Its a Wonderful Life” and “Vertigo” and it does make perfect sense the character he’s playing in “Broken Arrow”. The guy who has the highest morals kinda related to white savior complex #AMIND435

Te reading about Athleticism was very interesting to me. The idea of imposing “order” or “discipline” through sports was something I didn’t think about. However jut makes sense now because it is a form of assimilation. #AMIND435

I have seen stage coach before in high school for a class called the art of film. I thought it was interesting the teacher, at the time, never mention the implications and stereotypes of the Native people. #AMIND435

I haven’t seen the Last Mohicans. I was so surprised at the ending. The three deaths that occur really tie into the readings. The manner in which the deaths play out emphasize the expectations of native Americans and those who interact with them. #AMIND435

I found it interesting that our readings in NAM described the fear in miscegenation. The fear of mixing seems to be the root cause for depiction of Anglo-Saxon people + Native American people in films. The film makers want to set a clear distinction among both groups. #AMIND435
