First impressions: not a single song on this bts album justifies it being called arirang. the title is english. the song “hooligan” is begging for korean instrumentals but instead there’s a western string section. i think “aliens” was an attempt at a korean traditional hiphop blend but the production is so busy and poorly mixed i can’t parse what’s going on in the background half the time. arirang, no matter the version, is one of the most beautiful melodies i’ve ever heard. i can feel the hundreds of years of history and pride for their country when artists like song sohee perform it. it feels borderline offensive to slap it on this album that utilizes not a single piece of korean musical heritage throughout. FYA starts with alternating breathing down your neck and more outdated english slang - everything is “lit” and “gas.” Not a single one of their “hit making” western producers did a good job here, particularly on the first half of the album. there are skeletons of good songs underneath the massive heavy overdone sound mixing. “No. 29” offers you relief in the form of a jing ringing followed by a minute of silence which is strangely the most concept appropriate part of the album. I don’t hate “swim” as a song. it would feel right at home as a bside to you never walk alone. it’s very of that time. on an album that’s meant to be their great return to the industry, though, it’s such a flat choice. this album offers nothing new, nothing that justifies the theatrics they’re putting their city through right now. My pick for best song by a margin is “merry go round.” it’s overall a pretty pleasant song. my only complaint is the vocal processing. i’ve listened to bts since they debuted and they’re so edited on this track i had trouble identifying the members. i had the same issue on “they don’t know ‘bout us” what i think is jimin in the repeated chorus lines sounds so distorted and odd. “Into the sun” starts with a robotic edit of the members singing together. this is notable to me because a huge criticism i’ve had of kpop for years now is that no one knows how to sing together anymore. bts are not immune to this issue, arguably they’re one of the groups that made it an issue. and here their artificial solution is unsettling to say the least. “Like animals” is also alright. but like “swim,” it feels dated. this is a song from bts’s long gone. “one more night” is the bts attempt at a brat style club song. Overall I found this album over produced and oddly dated. It feels like an album that should have come in-between the most beautiful moments in life and wings. It’s not quite their english trilogy but not quite a return to their roots either. It’s like they had the vague sense that people wanted “old bts back” and don’t quite know what that means anymore.

@jinsoul_fan I'm so hurt, I'm so hurt. wait all that time just to hear something that isn't bts... to hear something western that sounds SO DIFFERENT. their uniqueness their value-it's GONE. the songs all sound the same and it's so disappointing to receive smth like this. It's just so sad...

as a bts fan of 10 years, this new album is not hitting. i’m sorry, but arirang is mid!!! all the songs sounded the same, the only good song was FYA maybe I’ll change my mind when I read the lyrics but this is not living up to the expectations I had. am I alone on this?
