i’ve said it before, but it’s absurd that we are still mandating years of foreign language for american HS kids. for most it’s a monumental waste of time, a neat party trick at best and immediately forgotten upon graduation. we should just let them take electives.
“it’s good for your brain” X to doubt, it would have been better for my brain to study something that interested me “okay but don’t you want to communicate with josé who mows your lawn?” no
@moonbeamdreams_ If someone isn't up to learning a foreign language they shouldn't be receiving an education in the first place
@moonbeamdreams_ French is mandatory up here and I can speak as much now as I could before High School none). Also, can we get rid of Speeches? Like, no one is "Learning Public Speaking" From giving one speech in English class. It just stresses everyone out and is a 2 week break for the teacher.
@moonbeamdreams_ Foreign language study is expected to produce a clear, durable skill, so it's somewhat easier to scrutinize. But I think really the vast majority of courses are "forgotten upon graduation," and if you took this as your criterion for evaluating curricula not much would survive.
