Different presidents, same message: NATO in Ukraine is a red line. 1990s: "Don't expand NATO east." 2000s: "NATO expansion threatens our security." 2008: "Ukraine joining NATO means war." 2014: "We will protect Russian speakers in Ukraine." 2021: "Stop sending weapons and building NATO bases." The warnings were public. On record. In speeches, interviews, diplomatic meetings. This wasn't hidden. This wasn't subtle. The West ignored every single one. NATO expanded anyway. First Poland and Hungary. Then the Baltics. Then talk of Ukraine and Georgia. Each time, Russia protested. Each time, the West pushed forward. February 2022 didn't surprise anyone who was paying attention. Russia said this would happen. The West called it bluffing. Then acted shocked when Russia followed through.
