Video: the number of Japanese students studying abroad in the United States peaked in the 1990s at over 46,000 and has since dropped to less than half that number. (data from Open Doors)
@mrjeffu Most of the Japanese students I know from my university ... tend to go to study abroad mostly in Australia.
@mrjeffu There are fewer young people ing Japan than in the past.
@mrjeffu Other countries keep growing and progressing while 🇯🇵 still stuck in the past, headed by a bunch of old dudes and very few women who still think English isn't important. Yen is basically the Peso of Asia, even if they could study abroad it would be extremely expensive for most.
@mrjeffu It doesn’t help that the yen is so weak now. That is playing a considerable factor for students not traveling overseas.
@mrjeffu Not surprised. There are fewer Japanese students. So less competition for places in Japanese universities. Why go to expensive universities overseas when they can study in more affordable local universities.
@mrjeffu Japan corporate start yearly staff recruitment for universities and colleges start in October to February. Most of the students are offered jobs before their final year ends. This could be the cause why Japanese are not studying abroad unless they want to stay oversea.
