If you thought DeSantis requiring teaching that the enslaved could “parlay” skills learned was bad. You ain't seen nothing yet. The African-American studies curriculum has been turned into conservative talking points for political posturing. Educators are required to teach that George Washington was a “key figure in the quest to end slavery.” Let's be clear, Washington never introduced legislation, an executive order, or a handwritten note seeking to abolish slavery. He stated that whipping was “very proper.” He died owning 317 enslaved people. Educators are also required to teach “but Black people owned slaves too.” A study by Black historian Carter G. Woodson revealed that census records show the majority of Black owners of enslaved were such from the point of view of philanthropy. The husband purchased the wife, or vice versa … The enslaved of Black people were the children of a free father who had found and purchased his wife back and the children were listed as enslaved on the census. 24 Black deaf students from Gallaudet University finally graduated after being denied their diplomas over 70 years ago! Although this is a reminder of the racial prejudice these students faced years ago, it’s beautiful to see them finally get the recognition they deserve!
UPDATE: The man in this photo is Joseph Wesley "Wes" Grant. The woman beside Wes is probably one of his sisters. Wes's parents, Thomas and Patsy, moved to Missouri from Kentucky after Thomas served in the Union during the Civil War, where they raised their family (and where this photo was taken). They were identified by Wes's great-great-granddaughter @goldietaylor, a renowned author and opinion writer based in Atlanta, Georgia. The 1898 photo and Taylor's headshot serve as a reminder of the important link between the past and the present. Taylor's achievements and professional success stand as a testament to the strength and resilience of her ancestors.
