@swamisandeepani @davidfrawleyved @Be_upto_date @RDXThinksThat @AmirLadki @iskcon @nrajabpcl @DAkkhar @SameerSood11 Vishu, a significant #Hindu festival celebrated with great enthusiasm in #Kerala & other southern states of #India, like #Karnataka and #TamilNaduis observed on first day of #Malayalam month of Medam. Marks beginning of astronomical year & is a time for worshipping #Vishnu & #Krishna. With its roots in ancient traditions & customs, Vishu holds a special place in hearts of Malayali people across India & globe. Term ‘Vishu’ originates from Sanskrit word ‘Viuvam,’ translating to ‘equal,’ symbolising balance between day & night during spring equinox. Although spring equinox precedes Vishu by 24 days, this festival, observed in spring, signifies commencement of astronomical new year in Malayalam calendar. Celebrated since antiquity in Kerala, Vishu’s roots can be traced back to as early as 844 CE, during reign of Sthanu Ravi. As per Indian mythology, one legend holds that Vishu marks day when Lord Krishna defeated demon Narakasura. Another myth suggests that Vishu commemorates the return of Surya Dev, Sun God, following his temporary absence. A contrasting folklore recounts Ravana, demon king, obstructing Surya Dev’s ascent from east. After Ravana’s downfall, Surya Dev resumed his rise from east on Vishu, giving rise to festival’s widespread celebration. Vishu celebrates & symbolises Malayali New Year, balance between day and night, victory of good over evil & hope for a prosperous year ahead.
