I got my final rejection for the application cycle and I really cannot help but feel defeated. I feel like I’ll never get into a program.
@breannajrogers I’m sorry to hear this, Breanna. For what it’s worth, the undergrads I work w/these days typically have success after ~ 4 cycles for clinical psych PhDs and 8+ pubs (~ half first author). Happy to take a look at your materials at some point if that would be helpful.
@nataliavandoren @breannajrogers FOUR?!!! who can afford to do that omg
@nataliavandoren @breannajrogers Things are going to vary across programs and advisors, so I wanted to share my experience. I've recruited 3 students so far and only 1 student had a publication (and only 1). I also recruited someone in their first cycle of apps, the other two were on their second.
@nataliavandoren @breannajrogers I’ve had ~ 10 postbacs/students get into fully funded PhD programs and none of them had close to these stats. I also review hundreds of applications for our PhD prgm each year and can definitely say those folks would be outliers.
@nataliavandoren @breannajrogers Do you think this is affecting the job market for lab manager positions that prospective non-clinical PhDs might be applying to? I heard from a student that a lab manager position she applied to had ~250 applications.
@nataliavandoren @breannajrogers 8 pubs prior to grad school??
@nataliavandoren @breannajrogers How on earth does somebody with only a bachelor's degree get 8 peer reviewed publications? What the hell are they publishing?
