Copywriters love to dunk on the words “very” and “really” Yet here’s the bestselling author of the last 30 years using both in the span of 4 sentences. If you nail the story your grammar doesn’t really matter all that much.
@nathanbaugh27 It's a kids' book. Grammar matters to adults.
@nathanbaugh27 Also-- In narrating the thoughts of a young boy, reallies and veries feel completely appropriate -- they're childish and not stuffy ;) Read it without the "very" and the "really" and see -- the tone changes.
@nathanbaugh27 But you still gotta love Twain's advice of replacing "very" with "damn."
@nathanbaugh27 Really? Can’t say I’ve seen that very much. Ah, I used “that”! That’s a big no no too..dammit!
@nathanbaugh27 This will probably sound super dumb (see how I avoided "very" and "really" there), but I think that reading the book with a British accent in mind makes those two words sound less aggravating
@nathanbaugh27 Context is important. JKR knows her audience well. Great reminder, Nathan.
@nathanbaugh27 Just search for -ly and get rid of them. "The road to hell is paved with adverbs." @StephenKing
