It is difficult to overstate the extent to which term limits would change Congress. They are supported by large majorities of most American demographic groups; they are opposed primarily by incumbent politicians and the special interest groups which depend on them. #TermLimits

Member of Congress are supposed to be direct representatives of the populations they live in, giving voice to local concerns at the state & federal level. Term limits serve as the best buffer to keep those career minded – if mediocre – political types, from gumming up the system.

Term limits don't have traction in Congress as the wishes of the public are at odds with the self-interest of members of Congress. Politicians seek to curry favor w/ the public is so that they can stay in office; listening to constituents isn't as attractive as staying in office

Term limits have been approved almost everywhere they’ve been on the ballot because concerned citizens see them as a positive structural reform, a necessary step to change the incentives of legislators so they would think more about the their constituents & less about re-election

When politicians serve on the same committees & work together frequently, it creates a comfort level that can leave them blind to what the voices of the voters are actually saying. Replacing politicians reduces this blindness, helping the government actually serve the people.

It was Benjamin Franklin who summed up the best case for term limits more than 2 centuries ago: “In free governments, the rulers are the servants & the people their superiors . . . . For the former to return among the latter does not degrade, but promote them.” #TermLimits

Term limits keep fresh ideas & perspectives in public office. It ensures that no one individual can focus more on keeping a job & power, than representing the public. Decisions are made carefully, because the public servant will again return to citizenship w/o the title or power

A small army of congressional staffers does volunteer work during campaign season; they have every motivation to do so, since they are campaigning for perpetuation of their jobs. #TermLimits @termlimitspledge
