I held firm for the longest time, but I’m calling it: as of Astra and Opus 5.5, you don’t need to read the code anymore. AI is superhuman at reading code. Frontier models can find bugs better than I can. Agents can answer any question about a codebase in seconds. At some point, I realized I was reading the code not because it got better results, but because it made me feel like I was being “responsible.” Engineering leaders at big tech companies don’t read the code. They have people to do this for them. They have design reviews, planning sessions, and other process to keep those people aligned, but then they get out of the way. If every line of code went through them, things would ship 10x slower. Running my agents the same way has massively boosted my productivity: - I provide high level wisdom on what makes good software — unrepresentable invalid states, minimal branches or speculative fallbacks — but don’t let the perfect be the enemy of the good. I worry about product quality, not code quality - I have one long-lived agent act as a manager over all others, across model providers. It runs adversarial reviews, plans, merges branches, and ships builds. It embodies the development process. Working this way has made it obvious to me that this is the future - If I ever do have to read the code to realize something was wrong, I ask what was wrong with my process that led to me having to read the code, then fix that Do you still read the code? Do you have a process that avoids it?
