Over the years of studying Kenya's history, I have always looked out for any record that any Mau Mau leader mentioned or knew about the country Kenya. Ultimately, I have resigned to the reality that the Mau Mau was in fact a Mt. Kenya (mostly Kikuyu) ragtag militia fighting for the return of fertile lands taken from the Kikuyu by white settlers. How it was then fashioned out as Kenya's freedom war is the biggest manipulation of history in many centuries. To begin with, let us acknowledge the obvious fact that Kenya's independence, like many of its peers in Africa, was a negotiated settlement, complete with guarantees extended to British interests and wealthy aristocratic landowners staying back after the departure of the colonialists. Power was handed over to a man who had lived in Britain for years, spoke English of the nose, had a British wife and child, and had conveniently been sent to a jail in Kapenguria where people could live with their wives for weeks and conceive babies! Only the colour of Jomo Kenyatta's skin wasn't British! So why was it instilled in the minds of Kenyan masses that "tulinyakua uhuru" via the Mau Mau? Two reasons, mainly. One, it bestowed the requisite fear factor on the new black rulers (in many speeches as President, Kenyatta threatened to crush his enemies like flour, harping on this false Mau Mau heritage). Two, and more importantly, it was used to raise the Kikuyu community above all else, as the people who had brought independence. This was the womb from which Kikuyu Entitlement came. "There would never have been independence without us". But note that the entire independence cabinet never had a single Mau Mau leader. Indeed, when some Mau Mau leaders realised they had been duped they returned to the bush, whereupon Kenyatta unleashed Kenya Army troops on them! I've always been interested in the political travels of pre-independence heroes, to gauge their nationhood credentials. In history books, I keep bumping onto Jaramogi doing meetings deep inside Luhyaland with Elijah Masinde, mobilising freedom movements in remote Kitui, meeting business and political networks in Mombasa, traversing the Kenyan landscape mobilising people to prepare for independence. Ditto Tom Mboya, Ambrose Ofafa, Achieng Oneko and others. This was in the 50s. What you won't find are Kikuyu "independence" leaders visiting the faraway parts of Kenya. Let us just defer to Lee Njiru, who says in his book that having worked under Kenyatta in the information department, he discovered that most Kikuyus, especially in government, had no idea what lay past Molo. They couldn't tell the difference between Luo and Luhya, and many, even today, would be surprised to hear that there is a Kenyan tribe called "Teso". To its credit, Kikuyu Entitlement in 1963 set up a truly talented cabinet, the best in the country's history. But to its utter discredit, on noticing the large fertile lands held by white aristocrats who had stayed, greed took over, and amassing wealth became a real philosophy. However, they knew how to do it while leaving state enterprises functioning. But the sheer number of millionaires made in the fifteen years after independence generated the lifelong desire by every ruling cabal to get rich fast, which is how the villagers who took power after Kenyatta ran every state corporation they touched to the ground, because they had no idea how to manage anything. This money, collectively held in the hands of the two ruling tribes, is actually the curse of Kenya. It is used to buy loyalty, to manipulate elections and to perpetuate that culture of corruption and greed launched in 1963. Part of the reason for the power volleyball is the view of the two that the other communities are too poor to understand how to protect ill-gotten wealth. Which ultimately means that change will never come to Kenya by the ballot, because we are a nation built on lies, with the first lie having been that the Mau Mau gave us independence!
