I’m not “Dis-abled” I’m not “Differently abled” I’m not “Special” I’m disabled. It’s one word, a neutral term… and one that absolutely describes how my conditions affect my quality of life. Disability isn’t a bad of dirty word. Disabled people are valid.

Me, a wheelchair user, to man in car blocking curb ramp: “Can you please move your car? You’re blocking the ramp.” Man: “In a little while.” Me: “I need you to do it now.” Man: “Can you calm down? I’m almost ready.” Almost ready? Disabled people are “ready” for access now.

It’s genuinely weird how often once you disclose you have a disability on a dating app how many people, men in particular, assume the disabled person is looking for a caretaker. Do you think my first stop would be OK Cupid for that? Pls. Sounds like projection.

A wheelchair user isn’t an obstruction, nuisance or a fire and safety hazard. We are just disabled people trying to get around in an environment filled with barriers and inaccessibility.

Driver to me,a wheelchair user: “Get off the street. It’s for cars.” Me: “The ramp is blocked. There are no sidewalks.I have to be here.” Driver: “Don’t travel alone. Get off the street.” Disabled people should be able to travel alone. Blame barriers, not disabled people.

Man in hospital seeing me, a wheelchair user: “I know how tough it is. I was lame for awhile after I broke my leg. I had to be in a wheelchair for a few weeks.” Whether you’re disabled for a month or permanently, no one should be referred to as “lame.”

In almost every instance, requests by disabled people for access or accommodation are met with responses of “no,” “not yet,” or “wait.” Disabled people are tired of exclusion. Disabled people are tired of waiting.

Me, a wheelchair user: “I need to take my wheelchair with me.” Ambulance driver: “Sorry. It won’t fit. You’ll have to go without it.” Me: “I’m not going without it.” (Driver brings wheelchair into vehicle) Don’t ever try to separate wheelchair users from their wheelchairs.

Man in hospital to me, a wheelchair user: “I feel for you. I was an invalid for almost a year. Now I’m good.” Me: “No one should ever be called an invalid.” No matter how many times I hear the word “invalid” applied to disabled people, it still stings.
