Are you applying to grad school and excited by evolution, statistics, and/or computer science? Our group is recruiting PhD students to study phylogenetic models. Fully funded at $37k/yr for 5 yrs. Get in touch if interested! @systbiol @sse_evolution @Biogeography @DiversifyEEB
@landismj @systbiol @sse_evolution @Biogeography @DiversifyEEB What happens to funding after year 5?
@nparmalee @systbiol @sse_evolution @Biogeography @DiversifyEEB Funding after Y5 comes from teaching, fellowships, other grants (if available), between couch cushions, etc. but would need to be improvised
@landismj @systbiol @sse_evolution @Biogeography @DiversifyEEB I haven’t been aware of this model in the biomedical sciences before. I’m curious. Are you making a big push to get students out in 5 years?
@nparmalee @systbiol @sse_evolution @Biogeography @DiversifyEEB no hurry for me, but want to assure students that there is a clear funding plan for 5 years :-) fwiw, where I did my PhD at a big public school, many evo bio students graduated in 6-8 years, taught every semester, funded their own projects, etc. have heard the same from others.
@landismj @systbiol @sse_evolution @Biogeography @DiversifyEEB Interesting, I have only heard of non-bio students having to seek their own funding, common in humanities and social sciences. I thought NIH funding was basically a given for bio grad students.
@nparmalee @systbiol @sse_evolution @Biogeography @DiversifyEEB I think often yes for big biomed programs, but more variable among eco/evo programs
@landismj @systbiol @sse_evolution @Biogeography @DiversifyEEB Gotcha. I wasn’t aware of the difference. I’ve found jobs here on Twitter so I retweet job postings whenever I see them. I have good colleagues at WashU.
