overcooking you've seen this: someone ships a dashboard that shows every number with a sparkline, every action has a confirmation modal, every empty state has an animated illustration and a tagline. individually each decision made sense to someone. together it feels like chaos. nothing is in focus. that's overcooking. not one bad decision in isolation, but the accumulation of reasonable ones that no one said no to. AI makes this worse as the cost of adding dropped to near zero. it can build a feature, even a whole new concept in minutes. so people do. and then they do it again. the thing that started with a clear purpose slowly becomes a collection of additions that are each justifiable but collectively incoherent. the root problem is that most "new ideas" aren't new. they're repackaging of something that already exists at a more fundamental level. a new sticker on an old concept. it feels like progress because something changed, with a new word and skin – but the thinking didn't go deeper, it just duplicated itself into confusion. the whole has a core. you feel it once you understand the whole system. everything in it are related and balanced. when you overload it, that gravity weakens. not because any one thing is wrong – but because attention is finite and you force it everywhere. what we need aren't more tools that make more slop. it's seeing through the chaos, and returning to what the thing actually is, and cutting everything that doesn't serve that. that's harder now, not easier. because there's always something else you could add with one more prompt.

My ideal AI design tool probably something like: A canvas tool, where you can get any view of your app rendered to edit or use as the starting point for a new view. You can freely explore, duplicate, and make changes visually. You could start these renders from other tools like @linear. User feedback -> render the screen to be edited. It would have design language, system and product guidance files that help guide the overall design based on your product. Each artboard carries metadata, like the origin of the view, who created it, what changes was made when, so you could query things across your whole team. You could create areas that you want AI to fill or complete. Fill this list, complete the columns with this data or using this screenshot or something. Edits in the artboard are tracked as a diff. You export those diffs as a plan for a coding agent to build against your actual codebase. The design tool agents keep check-ins with the coding agent and try to communicate the nuances of the design so it gets built as a prototype.

as agents make it easy to add features, design matters more, not less. the role is no longer just pushing pixels – it’s deciding what should exist, how it fits together, how humans stay in control, and how intelligence feels clear, trustworthy, and useful. taste, craft, and judgment have always been the bottleneck. the game is not who ships fastest, but who makes the right thing for humans.

I don’t know exactly what’s going on here, but it does feel AI-related. Unlike PM and eng, which started growing in 2024 (two years post-ChatGPT), design didn’t. If I had to venture a theory, I’d say that because AI is allowing engineers to move so quickly, there’s less

There is no secret sauce to making something great. It just takes a group of believers who care, who are unafraid to build and try crazy ideas. ryolu.notion.site/how-to-make-so…

Created my first PR yesterday (and this is 15 years of being a product designer). Feeling empowered by all these AI toolings. Funny enough, the most time consuming part was trying to add myself to all the relevant dev groups so I can have the right set of permissions.
