Looking back, one of the very first articles I had published in the LATimes featured The Heard Museum in Phoenix. That was before I lived in Arizona. Now that I do, it's such a joy to be a member. To attend curated lectures on new and permanent exhibits. To participate in art classes. Native American flute music floats in the air outside, inviting you in and setting the tone. Added bonuses include sculpture gardens, hand crafted silver jewelry, and an enchanting book store. If you visit Phoenix, it's a beautiful and informative stop. Oh we are thinking beings. Such intelligent, imaginative, intuitional thoughts and ideas can fill our days and dreams. But we can also get caught in loops of useless, stagnant, worrisome dead-ends. This is where the steering mechanism of meditation can help. Meditation has never been about stopping our thoughts. (pretty much impossible) Meditation teaches us to pay attention to our thoughts. To bring them back to the present moment, the current breath, when they wander off to places that are a waste of time and energy. Meditation enables us to hold thoughts lightly. To smile & wink at them. When I notice my brain looping around and around to no good end, or chewing on the same old bone, I call it out. I know it's trying to help me, I know it biologically tends to repeat tired old thoughts because doing so preserves its energy. I know it thinks there's a problem, so I assure my brain that I love it. "Thank you," I tell it, "but I've got this." And we move on. Now we're both happier. Meditation? It cleans out the junk drawer. I think all our hearts and sense of wonder went with them. We held a collective breath at their fiery re-entry, and held a hand to heart "thank-you, thank-you," as they bobbed safely in the blue Pacific. Artemis Il astronaut, Victor Glover, said, "Trust us, you look amazing. You look beautiful. From up here you look like one single thing. We are all Homo sapiens, no matter where you come from or how you look. ✨ On a much smaller scale, traveling far from home ON our planet has taught me that all people eat, laugh, cry, love, dream, smile, live for a time and then pass, making way for those to come. The part of travel we don't plan, is the encounters and stories that open our eyes and hearts at unexpected moments, to understanding each other, and when we do, we help lift the collective.
