There is a serious conversation Nigeria needs to have about the economics of religion. When congregants are repeatedly encouraged to give from increasingly scarce resources through fear, guilt, prophetic promises, spiritual manipulation and the suggestion that financial sacrifice is evidence of faith, we must ask difficult questions about where spirituality ends and financial exploitation begins. The problem is not generosity. Supporting a genuine religious community can be meaningful and necessary. The problem arises when the financial vulnerability of ordinary people becomes the economic foundation for extraordinary clerical lifestyles, while poverty is spiritualised as a test of faith and questioning the system is portrayed as questioning God. Faith should not require financial desperation. A church that demands accountability from its members should also be willing to demonstrate financial transparency, ethical leadership and accountability in the use of the resources entrusted to it. Perhaps Nigeria doesn't need another sermon about giving. Perhaps we need a deeper conversation about who benefits from our giving, who bears the cost, and why poverty so often seems to subsidise religious prosperity.

I am unapologetically grateful for this life. I don’t carry HIV as a burden to carry, the wisdom, resilience, strength and perspective that came with my journey. The privilege, consciousness of choosing my health (mental/physical/emotional/sexual), the support network of amazing friends who I now call family can't be said enough. NIGERIA’S STATE & RELIGIOUS PSYCHOSIS We have been taught to pray about problems created by people who have no intention of solving them. When political authority becomes sacralised, questioning power is recast as rebellion, while religious language becomes a mechanism for normalising suffering. The State fails, religion baptises the suffering, and the pulpit teaches the oppressed to call their oppression “God’s plan.” Question the government — you’re rebellious. Question the preacher — you’re blasphemous. Question the system — you’re “against God.” We spiritualise poverty, moralise oppression, and interpret structural failure as individual spiritual inadequacy. Then we are encouraged to pray for the transformation of conditions that require accountability, institutional reform, and collective action. Perhaps the greatest miracle Nigeria needs is not another prayer meeting, but a people courageous enough to stop confusing obedience with faith, silence with holiness, and suffering with destiny. Faith should challenge power—not provide it with immunity from scrutiny. God does not need our silence to remain God. Perhaps Nigeria does not need less faith, but a more intellectually honest relationship between faith, power, justice, and the human responsibility to change what we have the power to change.
