I was depressed for YEARS, saw no way out and I’m chronically ill. These weren’t temporary problem, they controlled my entire life shut up. Stop talking about suicide when you’ve never been suicidal

#ONEPIECE1196 So the chapter is out now, and as promised, here’s my take on this viral post. I’m fundamentally against this post (and I’ll explain why), but I can understand some of the points and the criticism. Still, overall I’m against it. Starting with the claim that Oda is being “brutally torn apart” online: there are a lot of negative comments, but there are also plenty of positive ones. That doesn’t mean too much by itself, the manga is huge and gets massive attention, so different opinions are normal. From what I’ve seen, a lot of people are actually enjoying the Elbaph arc. I also don’t understand the criticism about the flashbacks. Most of them were important and had clear reasons to be shown (Loki, Harald, Xebec, Brook). Even the smaller ones with Sanji or Zoro had value and needed to be included. Just look at the positive reactions to the Sanji flashback in the last chapter. In terms of creativity and writing, Elbaph doesn’t fall short of the pre-timeskip arcs for me. I’d even say it can compete with some of the best ones. People are judging it too early, wait until the arc is actually finished. The pacing has been solid so far. We finally have Imu as the endgame villain, and he’s already making moves against the protagonists before his big final arc. That’s something people criticized with Kaguya in Naruto and Yhwach in Bleach. And he already dismantled Luffy. What “lack of tension” are people talking about? Elbaph had one of the longest and most important flashbacks with Xebec, Loki, and Harald. That was huge for the overall One Piece world, it set up key foundations for characters like Shanks, Dragon, Loki, Shamrock, and pirates in general. It was so significant that a canon movie is coming out in theaters. If you take that big flashback out, we’re at roughly 50 chapters in Elbaph so far. The pacing has been good: a lot of plotlines have been moved forward, we got mural lore, the final villain is already acting as a villain in the arc, the Strawhats are getting stronger, and things are progressing well. You can criticize parts of it, sure. There are highs and lows, but the high points have been stronger and more important so far. The arc is well written overall. And just so people don’t think I defend everything Oda does: I’ll probably get criticized for this, but for me Wano is one of the worst arcs he’s drawn. I could write a 100-point list of everything I disliked about it. The pacing was bad, I think the ~150 chapters could have easily been done in 80–90. I gave Wano a 6.5/10, while my “normal good” One Piece arcs start at 8/10 and my top ones go higher. So I’m not blindly defending Oda. I fully understand people who were disappointed with Wano. But Elbaph? So far the pacing and the strong moments have been good. Oda is doing solid work on this one. About the breaks: yes, the ones in the last two or three months were annoying, but roughly half of them came from Shueisha. Also, Oda didn’t take his usual summer break this year, he kept working through the summer. So it roughly balances out with the September breaks. I don’t really get the strong criticism on the breaks for that reason. What I do agree with: Oda is getting older, and this is an extremely hard job. Mangaka decline over time and can’t keep the same pace and quality as in their prime, there are many examples of that. I hope One Piece finishes within the next 10 years. I also think he currently has too many side projects: Movies Live action Magazine drawings Other side projects I agree with you that he’s working way too much and that this is taking time away from the manga itself. I hope this calms down and that he gets more time for the series instead of being overloaded with commissions from Shueisha. I hope his workload is reduced in the future, especially since he’s getting older every year. I completely understand the concerns and fears many people have about Oda’s health. That said, a lot of what’s said in that post is simply wrong. I cannot understand the criticism against the Elbaph arc at all. The arc is easily a 9/10 so far and depends on the ending, things can change..
