Before 1825, sending a ton of flour from Buffalo to New York City cost $120, three times what the flour was worth. The Erie Canal cut that to $6 and turned a three-week journey into eight days. Farmers moved west, canal counties tripled their population, and tolls paid off the debt in about a decade. By 1860, New York handled 62 percent of American exports.

The Mississippi was littered with thousands of sunken trees that could tear open a boat's hull, and most people thought nothing could be done. Captain Henry Shreve disagreed. He designed a double-hulled snag boat with an iron-sheathed wedge and a winch that rammed the trees, broke them loose and hauled them out, then cut through the Great Raft, a logjam 150 miles long on the Red River.

Booking passage to Europe once meant waiting until a captain had enough cargo and favorable wind. Jeremiah Thompson and four other textile businessmen established the Black Ball Line with a different promise: fixed monthly sailings between New York and Liverpool in both directions, all year round. The service began in 1818, became a commercial success, and helped spread dependable departure schedules to other ports and eventually railroads.

New York faced a huge construction bill, difficult terrain, and opponents who mocked the whole idea. This short follows how the state financed the Erie Canal through bonds and taxes, opened an easier stretch early to bring in revenue, and tackled years of rock blasting and lock construction near Lockport. Clinton promised completion within ten years; the canal opened in eight.

How Did America Get Britain's Top Trade Secret?
Britain banned its textile machines, their drawings, and even its textile experts from leaving the country, so how did America get them? In 1789 Samuel Slater memorized the machinery he supervised in a Derbyshire mill and sailed for New York listed as a farm laborer. With Providence merchant Moses Brown, he rebuilt it from memory, and in 1790 the nation's first cotton spinning mill started work.

England had fewer people and far less money than France or Spain, so how did it end up colonizing America? The answer is three inventions: full-rigged ships that could cross oceans, double-entry bookkeeping that let investors track distant ventures, and the joint-stock company that capped each investor's loss at what he put in. Together they let profit-seeking corporations fund Jamestown in 1607.
