During the latest episode of the Xbox Two podcast, Windows Central journalist Jez Corden shed some light on why Xbox has rejected certain anime-style games like Gal Gun from releasing on its platform in recent years: “I've been speaking to a lot of figures, past and present, about why certain games have been banned on Xbox. There's a conspiracy theory among fans of a particular genre of games, notably anime-style dating simulations, because Microsoft has had this almost notorious app gap. PlayStation has these games, Nintendo has them, and Steam has them, but Xbox doesn't.” “The community has had this conspiracy theory that Microsoft was blocking these games. I actually found out that this probably isn't as conspiratorial as some people might expect. Apparently, there was somebody at Xbox who hated anime-style games and had previously been declining them. This is something I've heard, so I took it with a pinch of salt because it's just industry rumour.” “But I think times have changed. Leadership has changed hands, and some of those games that were previously blocked have now mysteriously started getting approved. So, yeah, times have definitely changed.” “And I think you said it was a one-man power trip. It sounds like it was, yeah.” Many indie developers, especially Asian ones, have reported difficulties getting their games approved by Microsoft for release on Xbox. Just recently, an Xbox port of the 2025 indie game Seek was almost cancelled because of such issues. It seems like Microsoft seeks to make publishing games on Xbox less challenging for indie developers. Are there any such games you would want to see come to Xbox? #microsoft #xbox

One individual’s abuse of power brought no benefit whatsoever to Xbox. Games that are already available on PlayStation, Nintendo, and Steam have no legitimate reason to be denied release on Xbox. What is especially disappointing is that Xbox leadership at the time failed to prevent this from happening and seemed largely indifferent to it.

If Muchi Muchi Pork and Pink Sweets Boosted was rejected on @XBOX for having anime artwork, please consider resubmitting it. The individual making those bad decisions appears to be gone. These games released on Xbox 360 and should be on Series X|S x.com/scottvanvliet/…

We’ve heard the feedback from developers: bringing a game to XBOX should be easier than it is today. We agree, and we’re working to make it better. We care deeply about ID@XBOX and the developers who build for XBOX. We’re starting with some of the areas we know can create

With the formation of Xbox XP, it's clear Xbox is doing a 180° on their first-party strategy, now focusing on and building the biggest franchises Xbox has, instead of the previous rather hands-off approach with smaller games. Both approaches have their pros and cons. Moving forward, Xbox will primarily invest in its strongest IPs such as Minecraft, Fallout, Call of Duty, World of Warcraft, Overwatch, StarCraft, Diablo, Grounded, Halo, Gears of War, Forza, The Elder Scrolls, Wolfenstein, and more. The new approach won't completely rule out the creation of new IP; OD, Physint, Clockwork Revolution or Elsewhere Entertainment projects are all going ahead as well. Xbox XP will accelerate these brands via cross-media and shows for Fallout, Gears of War, Grounded, Wolfenstein, and Diablo are already announced or running. If Xbox XP can achieve to connect these IPs closer to Xbox -- "signature exclusives" are one way to do that -- they'll strengthen the Xbox brand as a whole.

My reasonable suspicion is that Xbox has long held a bias against games featuring anime-style female protagonists and has applied stricter approval standards to them than to games of other genres or styles. As far as I am aware, concerns of this nature have been raised since the Xbox One era. If higher barriers do in fact exist for certain genres or forms of artistic expression, I believe Xbox should make its review standards more transparent and provide developers with clear explanations for approval or rejection decisions. In particular, if Xbox wants to expand its presence in Asian markets such as Japan and South Korea, it should be more receptive to the diverse range of subculture and anime-style games that are popular among local players and developers. A platform's content policies should be consistent and predictable, and it should avoid creating the perception that certain genres are being unfairly disadvantaged. x.com/RatalaikaGames…

I hope this will lead to more Japanese games that end up skipping Xbox to land on the Xbox platform. Overall this is a step in the right direction 🙂
