It is unfortunate that seasonal streams of Delhi have become drains, both in form and in name! The Sahibi river, when flowing through Delhi, is now the Najafgarh drain. Draining the Najfgarh lake has caused immense damage to the groundwater system in South and South-west Delhi.

As the capitals moved towards the river (Yamuna), the primacy was given to managing flow of water instead of storage, as in Shahjahanabad (under Shah Jahan's chief engineer Ali Mardan, who linked Yamuna to the Sahibi river, creating a network of canals that fed dighis and wells).
