Recreation of an armored Comanche horse from 1700. Raw hide scales with sand glue on provided protection against arrows and melee weapons. It eventually fell out of favor when guns became widely available.

He dealt with the goddamn customers so that the engineers didn't have to. He had people skills. He was good at dealing with people. Can't you understand that?

Pope Leo XIV has been diagnosed with lung cancer, the Vatican confirmed. The 71-year-old underwent surgery at Rome’s Gemelli Hospital on 13 October, with doctors removing the lower lobe of his right lung. Tests confirmed lung adenocarcinoma. The surgery was successful, with no complications. Earlier this year, Leo quoted Gandalf in his first encyclical, Magnifica Humanitas. In paragraph 213, he drew on Tolkien’s words from The Return of the King while discussing our responsibility to do good, even when problems seem overwhelming: “It is not our part to master all the tides of the world, but to do what is in us for the succour of those years wherein we are set, uprooting the evil in the fields that we know, so that those who live after may have clean earth to till.” Wishing him strength and a smooth recovery.

This is clearly not acceptable

The significant social fallout from Covid lockdowns is evidence against the idea that society can quickly & effortlessly replace person-to-person interactions with new digital technology, including AI.

The man that incited an insurrection against his own country will most certainly try to steal this election. We need to be ready with every possible legal counter-measure. Remember these three key points. 1 - It will happen. 2 - We will stand up. 3 - He will fail.

This has been the true Republican Party’s behavior behind closed doors in Washington since Trump’s arrival. None of this is new; it has become normalized for them. However, for many Americans reading this, it still produces anger, and rightfully so. We’ve reached a point where this is no longer solely about the party. The entire country has suffered because too many of these individuals have come to believe that influence comes by holding a political title, while neglecting their fundamental responsibility: to serve the nation regardless of personal repercussions. Many convinced themselves that silence would prevent further division. But what does that argument mean when the result is a nation that has endured fear, exploitation, and instability for the past two years? They have failed to hold Trump accountable for the abuses we’ve witnessed, while allowing our country to be diminished and ridiculed on the global stage. One day, many of them will look back and be ashamed of the legacy they chose to leave behind. And that will not be something Trump did to them. It will be the consequences of their actions.

Sen. Tillis writes that at least 30 Republican senators have expressed reservations about many of Mr. Trump's actions, but usually are only willing to speak up privately, fearing that if the president decides to target them, their days will be numbered cbsnews.com/news/senator-t…

The maximum amount an individual can donate to a candidate is $3500. Elon Musk has spent $380 million on the 2024 and the 2026 midterms — so far. Billionaires shouldn’t be allowed to buy elections. Overturn Citizens United.

@SidKhurana3607 Because Icelanders use patronymic "surnames" and the Vietnamese have a very limited pool of surnames (e.g. I have 3 coworkers surnamed Tran, none of whom are related).

On October 5, Captain Tadeusz Lutak, alias "Pancerz", the last soldier of the September 1939 campaign, passed away at the age of 109. He has stood down from his final watch. 🇵🇱🕯️ An absolute legend of Polish history, a WWII hero, and a true patriot. Rest in peace.

@ThatchEffendi This is in reference to the Sarmatian cavalry stationed in Northern England, right?

@americanmlnm @DMike_Day fair enough. Doesn't make Hegseth a good SECDEF though.

Ths sad reality is that far too high a percentage in the country does not have sufficient knowledge of how the nation and the world function in the first place. On top of that most don't care and fail to stay responsibly aware of current events. The broadest swath of the population is complacent, living in the comfort of American life, free to pursue its favorite American past times and diversions without a care in the world, oblivious to many of the important items of the day to the extent that evil doers are free to use the levers of power to their advantage. For those who do want to be responsible and gain insight of the world getting reliable information is a minefield. News/Information providers are consolidating under the control of oligarchs. Algorithms in technology easily manipulate the thinking of the masses. None of this is to say that Americans don't work hard, don't want a better world for their children, or that most are motivated by malice. Most are actually good and decent human beings. But it does seem to be part of the culture to distrust and be paranoid of expertise, intellectualism and democratic institutions that pull people from a provincial identity, and to avoid abstract concepts and nuance thinking. Without the culture I just described, a Donald Trump could never have been possible, nor would he had been possible early on in a parliamentary system versus the presidential system we have. Think of the problem this way: There is A) Trash America, B) Complacent America (probably over 50%) and C) Respectable America. More of B needs to wake TF up and join forces with C to neutralize A. It would appear at this point that nothing short of catastrophe and calamity will be sufficient to awaken B to the point that it needs to be in order to save the republic.

Why aren’t American voters demanding that Congress remove a president who keeps courting Putin while Russia reportedly feeds Iran intelligence on US forces and North Korean troops help Russia invade Ukraine? What, exactly, does “America First” mean now? 🇺🇸 Confused Brit 🇬🇧

My personal opinion is that Trump's lying about prices - that they're way down from when he took office, that almost everything is cheaper now, that they're falling rapidly right now - is his single most politically damaging category of lie. His lies about many subjects require some level of research/prior knowledge/political engagement to debunk. When he lies about prices, even devoted supporters are passively debunking him with their own eyes every day. x.com/tripgabriel/st…

The very idea of the leader of the country deciding which news is real and which news is fake, and treating outlets differently based on that determination, IS an assault on the free press, in fact, it's an assault on the very notion and idea of a free press.
