Most companies that lose don't lose on product. They lose because someone worse was easier to find. The Farmer's Dog is a $1.2B company with a 0.45% Instagram engagement rate. About 1,100 likes a post. They didn't win fresh pet food on owned reach — they bought their way to being the default answer, and the organic lane in that category is still sitting empty. Starface invented the decorative pimple patch. 20,000 doors, roughly $150M in revenue. Social listening now shows the category getting mentioned more than the brand. They created the demand. Temu is harvesting it. Ultrahuman is the second-largest smart ring maker by units sold. 201,000 followers, no marketing lead in the public org chart. Oura is raising at $10.9B. Three categories. Same pattern. The better product doesn't lose because it's worse at marketing. It loses because distribution compounds and product doesn't. Every quarter a competitor spends being the default, the gap gets more expensive to close.

Curious whether you're capturing anything from the room that keeps working afterwards, or whether it's deliberately a one-night thing

In-the-wild footage always outperforms the demo reel for this category. The demo shows what the model can do; the kiosk shows what a stranger does when nobody's explaining it to them. Second one is much harder to fake.

@hassaanraza The cringe test is underrated as a benchmark. Latency and FPS are measurable but they don't capture the thing that makes people close the tab. Curious whether you've found it correlates with anything you can instrument, or if it stays subjective

@hassaanraza The Knowledge Navigator video is remarkable for how much it got right about interface and how much it got wrong about who'd build it. Apple imagined the agent; the hard part turned out to be the face on it, which is a much stranger problem

Product insight, intuition, taste are rooted in countless factors so it isn’t possible to just become great at product with tips & tactics. But I’ve watched many people get much better after dropping their lifelong need to feel smart and sound intelligent while building.
