Hockey was a very different game in 1917, so no era adjustment can fully account for a century of changes. But Bouchard’s production relative to league scoring and his share of Edmonton’s offense make a strong statistical case for the best start ever by an NHL defenseman.

This debate gets even more interesting when looking at each player’s share of their team’s offensive production through 5 games: Bouchard: 12pts on 26 Oilers goals (46.2%) Cameron: 15pts on 35 Arenas goals (42.9%) Bouchard has factored into a larger percentage of his team’s goals

In 1917–18, NHL teams averaged 4.75 goals per game, compared to 3.08 in 2025–26 (a 35.2% lower scoring rate today) Applying a simplified era adjustment based on league scoring rates, Cameron’s 15PTS translate to approximately 9.73 in the modern NHL, compared to Bouchard’s 12.

In the NHL’s inaugural season, Cameron recorded 9G and 15PTs for the Arenas through his first five games, surpassing Bouchard’s raw totals. However, comparing their production without accounting for the scoring environments of their respective eras doesn’t tell us the full story.

Is Evan Bouchard having the greatest start to a season by a d-man in NHL history?? 🤔 Through 5 GP, he's recorded 6G and 12 PTS, outperforming his 0.9 xG by a staggering +5.1. Those numbers sent me down a rabbit hole all the way back to 1917.
