Love the togetherness in #QA when it comes to evaluating product locking. For me manual multi-user testing of database locking strategy still has a place on modern day product testing

8) Programming and using tools *could* focus on probing the product; broadening coverage; varying factors; perturbing behaviours; monitoring state; analyzing and visualizing output; easy, inexpensive benchmarking of small components (another wonderful idea from @pete_houghton).

7) Have a look at a typical article or blog on “test automation” (automated checking). What does it focus on? Product risk? Bugs in the product? Investigation? Discovery? Variation to increase coverage? Not very often. More often on a routine to solve some button-pushing problem.

6) Check code is often taken much less seriously than production code. It’s probably not such a great idea to take code of uncertain quality and check it using code of dubious quality. Yet that appears to happen a lot.

5) Most of the talk and activity I see around “test automation” focuses on getting machinery to press its own buttons, as if operating the product and comparing an output to a prediction were The Big Deal in testing. It isn’t.

4) And once again (damn him! 😄), @pete_houghton beats me to it and blogs about something I’ve had in mind for ages. Automated checking has the potential to induce lots of variation. Checking with lots of variation can serve exploration and discovery.

3) I think it’s a really good idea for to developers to check and confirm their work with assistance from machinery and code, and with ideas contributed by others, including testers. Confirmation is a terribly weak form of testing, in which we aspire mostly to no discoveries.

2) That stuff where we focus effort on repeating some procedure to produce an expected result? That’s demonstration and confirmation; the absence of new insight. A scientific experiment—a test—introduces variation to yield new discoveries and deeper knowledge.

1) Once again: testing is not about showing that the product can provide an expected result. Testing is exploring and experimenting to discover and learn about the unexpected.

Just heard the phrase 'tester tested' - it should be a standard classification opposed to non-professionally tested. The #QA profession are often guilty of underselling
