we almost launched Quest without required photos. the logic made sense at the time: lower friction, more signups, bigger top of funnel. but every time we pressure-tested it, we kept coming back to the same problem. a profile without a photo is basically anonymous. and anonymous profiles attract the exact users high-intent daters are trying to avoid. so we made photos required. signups probably took a hit. we accepted that. the people who won't upload a real photo of themselves are not the people we're building for. we debated whether to build for web at all. the assumption was: dating apps live on phones. nobody opens a browser to find a date. but we kept hearing from users who wanted to fill out their profile on a laptop. review their matches with a bigger screen. actually think before they typed. so we built it. For as long as I can remember, I knew I wanted to publish one of my novels. I also spent a long time being terrified of it. Terrified that people would be critical. Terrified that the stories in my head would not translate on the page. Terrified that I would finally share something personal and discover that nobody connected with it at all.
