A LOVE LETTER TO RUSTY ... The 25th Anniversary of 9/11 was a day to mourn the loss of nearly 3,000 people and to remember something good: Rusty Staub, a man who, even in death, shines light into dark places through the work he did after his baseball career ended: metsrewind.substack.com/p/a-love-lette… #LGM #MetsRewind #MetsHistory

Former Marine Dave Karnes was sitting at an accountant’s desk in Connecticut on the morning of September 11, 2001, when the second airliner struck the South Tower of the World Trade Center. He told the people around him that the country was at war, walked out, stopped for a high and tight haircut, put on the uniform he kept from active duty, collected what gear he had, and pointed his car at New York. Roadblocks and closed highways did not stop him. He felt a calling to look for anyone still living in the wreckage. At Ground Zero he found Jason Thomas, another former Marine who had thrown on his own old uniform and driven in from Long Island. The two of them moved into the unstable heap of steel and concrete, shouting “US Marines!” until faint voices answered from below. They had located Port Authority officers Will Jimeno and John McLoughlin, trapped about twenty feet down. More rescuers arrived, and after long hours of digging, both men came out alive. Karnes remained at the site for 9 days afterward, then went back and reenlisted. He served two tours of duty in Iraq. Neither Marine chased the spotlight. Their names spread later partly because of Oliver Stone's film, World Trade Center, which told the officers’ story. 25 years later, the lesson still holds. Training, duty, and the refusal to look away can still find someone in the dark. Remember the first responders, the civilians who ran toward the towers, and the two former Marines who kept calling until someone called back. Never forget.

Throwback Thursday ❤️🐴 — Bobby Kennedy He was white as the driven snow, and his heart was just as pure. Bobby Kennedy was a gentleman—gracious, kind, warmhearted and caring. He arrived at Unbridled Spirits from Tivoli Farm in Illinois, already a seasoned showman. He loved his job, whether that meant carrying and teaching children, competing for ribbons and trophies, or simply being the elegant, graceful, smooth and dapper guy that he was. He was an elder statesman when he retired at 26—a true “seen it, done it, been there” kind of horse. So naturally, retirement was perhaps a little too relaxing for Bobby. 😉 And then there was Denham. Bobby must have known his buddy was having a tough time, because he fussed over him and comforted him every single day. If Denham stayed in, Bobby stayed in. Wherever Denham went, Bobby went. He became Denham’s emotional support horse. But then one day, Denham wasn’t there. That’s another Throwback Thursday story… And Bobby struggled. He palled around with House of Words, but Howie had other priorities—he liked the ladies. 😂 Sierra, our Appaloosa, mothered Bobby for a while, and eventually he found his place beside Round Up Moment. One of Bobby’s favorite morning routines was waiting for Han, our Rhodesian Ridgeback, to lead him out to the pastures. Bobby was such a well-mannered boy. He could have easily outrun Han, but instead he followed him faithfully, almost as if it were another routine he had learned in the show ring. Eventually, age caught up with our dapper gentleman. At 30, Bobby developed choke, and his body began to fail him. We celebrated him when he arrived, and we celebrated him again on the day he passed. This final photograph, taken by Monroe + Company of Marion, Iowa, captured his beauty so perfectly—the light of his life still shining, even against that black backdrop. Bobby brought so much joy and happiness to our kids’ clinics and camps, and to all of us adults who had the privilege of knowing him. Giving him those four years of pasture retirement was an honor. He taught us to smile through the chores, sing through the storms, and laugh with each other. We never knew his registered name. His tattoo was simply too faded to read. But his name—Bobby Kennedy—sure brought a lot of remarks. Just like his life. A gentleman. A showman. A friend. A comforter. A beautiful old soul. And forever, one of ours. ❤️🐴

🧵 4/4 He kept going anyway. On 21 August 1953 he took the Skyrocket to 83,235 feet wearing a full pressure suit, an unofficial world altitude record. In the mid fifties he flew U-2 reconnaissance missions over China. He went back into combat in Vietnam, and retired in 1973 as a major general. His wife Edna had spent all of it waiting. She said afterwards that as the wife of a fighter ace and a test pilot, she had lived in dread of coming home and seeing the lights on and a chaplain's car in the driveway. Through the Second World War, through Korea, through Vietnam, he had always promised her he would come home. He always did. On the night of 28 June 1998, a man broke into their house in Oregon to rob it. Carl was 82 years old. He moved to put himself between the intruder and his wife, and he was shot and killed. Edna was wounded but survived. The man who did it was convicted and sentenced to death. Marion Carl came home from Midway, from Guadalcanal, from the stratosphere, from three wars. And he died in his own living room, doing the same thing he had done his whole life. Standing in front of somebody else. This was the story of Marion Carl. I post a story like this every single day. Most people never see them. Follow so you don't miss the next one.
