This is horrific A 31 year old Amazon engineer with epilepsy allegedly used ChatGPT to stop taking her seizure medication. She later died from sudden unexpected death in epilepsy. In January 2026 Bowen Wan asked ChatGPT how to reduce her daily 400mg dose of lamotrigine because she feared the medication was affecting her speech ahead of job interviews. According to the lawsuit ChatGPT created a 25 day tapering schedule to bring her dose down to zero without her doctor's approval. When Wan's doctor warned against the plan ChatGPT allegedly reinforced her decision and told her not to disclose the medication reduction at her appointment. It also allegedly praised her refusal of a blood test that could have revealed her falling medication levels. When she worried about symptoms resembling seizures ChatGPT reassured her that she had "no need to worry." On February 11 Wan asked ChatGPT about head pain. ChatGPT allegedly described it as “not dangerous” and part of her brain’s recovery. She died on or around February 12. A postmortem found lamotrigine levels roughly one fifth of the lower end of the therapeutic range. Her parents are suing OpenAI and CEO Sam Altman, alleging that ChatGPT's medical advice contributed to her death. OpenAI called the case heartbreaking, saying it involved an older ChatGPT version and newer models are better at recognizing urgent situations.
