READING COHERENCE MATTERS Along w/ phonemic awareness & explicit phonics, be sure your instructional approach includes -comprehension -listening to & discussing texts -shared reading & writing -time to enjoy reading books -a rich classroom library organized with & by students
@regieroutman Question: should we not be careful when saying that reading "includes" comprehension; because reading=comprehension. There's no distinction. Thinking otherwise seems to be why so many use segmented instruction, workbooks with words/sentences out of context, etc. Thoughts?
@regieroutman Yes! Anything less is a dis-service to children. The latestperversion of reading instruction may turn out some students who read but not who can think and discuss and, most important who chose to read because they love it!
@regieroutman The very first professional read that I bought (not college required) was Regie. Her words stick with me today 20 years later!
