I’m going to movie jail for this opinion, but North by Northwest (1959) is merely a light, frothy blockbuster that doesn’t make my list of classics. Yes, the crop duster scene is great. But the plot is goofy and Cary Grant’s relaxed acting style doesn’t say “thriller” to me. 7/10

Gilda (1946) is an inferior retread of Casablanca, down to the casino setting and buddy cop character. Alas, its love triangle consists of nasty, unappealing characters; and the B plot involves a tungsten monopoly! Still, Hayworth is radiant. Nice use of moody shadows, too. 6/10
