@PapiNevaLacking We'll be adding feedback commands to our discord bot so users can see what their favored destination is in comparison to the list of servers we offer.
Let's talk about 2K! We're noticing the narrative around community server projects having "delay" so let's deep dive with Revival about how 2K's servers work and why Delay will never be eliminated, specifically for in-gameplay networking.
2K has been using a familiar networking protocol called the "Lockstep Engine" for online gameplay since 2K14 (that's as far as we looked.) This engine is still in effect in 2K's recent titles. The main topic we're gonna be touching on is DELAY. It's also part of why we've been capped at 30-60FPS on 2K Titles since the beginning of time. Despite hardware getting way better.
Delay is infamous on NBA 2K14 -> NBA 2K27. All of 2k's games give their users up to 100ms of input delay by DEFAULT. Here's how it works with our demonstration.

What most triple-a titles shoot for is to offload the "simulation" and/or gameplay registration/logic on the server.
That allows all inputs to be based on the round-trip latency without other users in question. The issue with this is Basketball is a transactional game that heavily relies on both players experiencing the same thing.
Applying this logic to NBA 2K is reallyyyyyyyyy complex.
Collision is the main factor, playing defense to guard your opponent means you have to accept that a blocked shot on your screen wasn't blocked for everyone else, leaving you frustrated in moments that are very frame-logic sensitive. 2K opted for letting u suffer with latency for a better simulation experience. Which is very understandable.
Latency is a trillion dollar issue around the world, there's no "fix" to latency. You'd have to rewrite part of the game and your server entirely to simply compensate and improve the FEEL of latency and even then that distorts how the game plays and feels entirely.
We don't even have source code to the game, so we'd be doing it near-blind to make matters worse. Not saying we're not doing anything to improve it, it's simply an architectural issue with the game entirely.
@PapiNevaLacking Yes, we currently have Virginia (NA East) LA (NA West) Dallas (central) Amsterdam (EU) and Sydney (Australia).
Working on expanding more as we can support it with our current playerbase, expanding too quick would leave our players with empty parks.
Yes! We touched on this a bit:
TLDR; 2K ignored all user setting preference in live gamemodes, defensive assistance was at MAX leaving everyone feeling "Muddy" or "delayed" specifically on defense. Commonly felt being "Pulled" towards switching matchups.
We have our own update coming to resolve this in a clean fashion.
We're literally completely free after our paid early access period.
It's easy to "these guys did it for free" when their circumstance is drastically different. We have ~2,000 new unique users a day. Those games average 1,000 players throughout the day.
Again, if you feel so ill about this motive, you're welcome to take on all of Revival's costs for the betterment of the world.
It does, you’re not hosting a multi-region infrastructure and offering it as a free service longterm. It’s impossible for the average person, I’m a college student not a multi-millionaire backed startup.
I understand the need to be against charging, but there’s a time and place to nitpick. We charge the bare minimum and actively giveaway residual profits back into the community directly with pure cash.
@jalendamar@NBA2K Whew, this is a hot take. I personally did not like 18. Felt way too stiff and a almost a change of direction from 17. Felt like the first big push away from what 2K should’ve stuck to design wise.
Congrats on the $100 ❤️
As we progress and look forward to @NBA2K addressing the community’s #SaveTheGame movement. There’s something special about our community and certain developers picking up these older 2K games we love and giving them the care and support they deserve.
On this topic, we’ve spoken long ago on the design of older 2K’s being built on Realistic aspects of basketball to guarantee the player’s gameplay isn’t completely unrealistic but with an arcade-esque, non-archetype-specific gameplay experience that we’ve all unknowingly loved and was slowly watered down as we progressed from 2K15 -> 2K27. We’d love for this to be a 2K standard again. It’s near impossible to enforce uber realism & RNG whilst feeling rewarding in gameplay with a controller in a player’s hand. As players, we can mesh together different ideas of gameplay variations with different animations and mechanics in the game.
For some, they couldn’t put this idea of 2K they wanted into words and resulted to plainly saying they preferred an older 2K. We want you guys to comment your favorite 2K and let us know why you think it was so fun to play and your favorite aspect about it. We’ll be giving away $1,000 to commenters to endorse the fact that your feedback means everything. Leave your Cashapp Tag alongside your comment, speak your mind, and add #SaveTheGame.
@OttoScarr@NBA2K YOU the goat. Congrats on all star 1 and your $100.
(just imagine i sent it, we gotta wait until our payment processor stops thinking we’re hacked.) I’ll be back.
@kaleb_uhrich@NBA2K 2K17 MyCareer >> i loved it. although i wish grinding badges was a bit more straightforward, once u learn it’s unforgettable.
W and congrats on your $100
@scoomgang12@NBA2K Yes, part of what makes gaming fun is that your grind is what gives you the ability to have fun how you want to.
You unlock, achieve, or learn how to play how you want to within the realistic limits. We stuck to that!
Congrats on your $100
@xJayhawk@NBA2K Definitely miss the community aspect of the older games, i think this falls on 2K’s engagement and design rather than the game itself, i do agree though.
