I explain here why I voted for the “Zionism is racism” motion at the Green Party conference. I now find myself, despite being Jewish, labelled “antisemitic” and “extremist” or sometimes worse. Obviously, I do not accept these labels Here is my thinking 1. The dominant Israeli and Western narrative is that Zionism means (a) the right for Jews to have a homeland in their biblical land and (b) the right to have a place of safety after persecution culminating in the horror of the Holocaust 2. ⁠This, on its face, is very reasonable, right & proper. This is the core of the UK political & media response to the Greens motion 3. ⁠Sadly, the early Zionist slogan that Palestine would be “a land without people, for a people without a land” was not true - the land DID have people, Palestinians 4. ⁠The great Palestinian-American intellectual, Edward Said, wrote a 1979 essay called “Zionism from the viewpoint of its victims” 5. ⁠That viewpoint is conspicuously absent from much discussion in the West 6. ⁠Zionism has meant decades of ethnic cleansing, oppression, apartheid & killing of millions of Palestinians BECAUSE they are Palestinians 7. ⁠This is why Zionism is racism 8. ⁠One of my (many) Jewish heroes is Marek Edelman, the last surviving commander of the resistance in the Warsaw Ghetto. He did not go to live in Israel. He was an anti-Zionist. He said, “To be a Jew means always being with the oppressed, never with the oppressors”

There is a fundamental problem, a wilfully dishonest problem, with the argument that Zionism means different things to different people or that it simply means supporting a Jewish homeland. The problem is that Zionism, as an ideology, has never manifested as anything other than an ethno-nationalist, colonising movement that has forcibly displaced, massacred and subjugated another people. It doesn't matter what your personal definition is: that is the reality, and no other reality has ever existed. Zionism has never meant anything other than that, has never been anything other than that. It has, in the real world, always acted as a racist doctrine. It's very clear that opposing it is not antisemitic. It is pro-freedom.

@Sulkhan Well let's see... they made the whole world safer by defeating the nazis. Also for several decades acted as a brake on US imperialism, so many countries benefited from that. Forced US into several arms limitation treaties. Etc.

Need barriers between cars and mobility lane and enough width for passing of different types of active mobility devices.

This statement is either: 1) Built out of total ignorance. 2) Built out of the intelligence apparatus of Tel Aviv and Washington. It's a specious claim that artificial superintelligence will benefit everyone. Humanity's problems are not caused by a lack of intelligence, our problems are caused by greedy plutocrats like Zuckerberg. It's like a serial killer telling us we can stop serial killing by making serial killers smarter. The argument hinges on the premise that humanity is suffering because we're just not smart enough to come up with the right solutions, when in reality that hasn't been the case for a very long time. Humanity has had the technology and resources to solve all its major problems for generations; we've just chosen to use our technology and resources making rich people richer instead. We've long had the ability to end extreme poverty, to stop destroying our biosphere, to stop waging wars, to stop pillaging the global south at unfair prices, to stop imposing starvation sanctions, to end genocides, to remove money from politics, to institute true democracy, to create a well-informed electorate free from propaganda brainwashing, and to provide everyone with a decent standard of living. This hasn't failed to happen due to our lack of superintelligence, it has failed to happen because the people with the power and the money actively stop it from happening. No amount of added cleverness is going to make plutocrats less greedy, make warmongers less bloodthirsty, make politicians less corrupt, make empire managers less tyrannical, make imperial propagandists less deceitful and manipulative, or make capitalists less exploitative and ecocidal. Give them artificial superintelligence and they'll just use it to grab up more money and control, just like they're doing with the AI of the present day. We can already see that AI is not making the world a better place. It's already taking away jobs, facilitating war crimes and mass surveillance, poisoning art, and making people crazy and stupid. We're already witnessing the results of more intelligent AI. Continuing to say we just need the AI to be more intelligent is like taking a pill to get healthy, having a terrible reaction to the medicine, and then deciding we just need to dramatically increase the dose. Artificial superintelligence isn't going to solve all our problems because our problems don't arise from insufficient intelligence. We don't need artificial superintelligence, we need basic human kindness. We need justice. We need ethics. No matter how much intelligence we add to the AI soup, it's never going to magically add up to simple human morality. Which is what we're actually going to need if we're going to create a healthy world.
