Are Small Models Really a Threat? The Anthropic Fear Factory just released a new report warning that small models may be only months away from self-replicating across cheap IoT devices like off-brand Android TV boxes and smart ovens. They say such an AI worm would be hard to shut down since there’s no central kill switch. We’ve gone from “The Terminator is coming” to “your toaster might kill you.” But the experiments don’t support the dramatic headlines. They ran a 26B model across 15 $55 TV boxes at 0.39 tokens per second. The end-to-end test used emulated devices with deliberately open ADB ports, so the “hacking” step was trivial. The capable model often ran on a separate server. Agents were harnessed and told to propagate. This is not proof of autonomous rogue AI worms in the wild. Nor is the threat even novel. Worms that do this without AI already exist. Mirai in 2016 scanned for default credentials and built massive DDoS botnets. Kimwolf has infected over two million devices, mostly cheap Android TV boxes, by hitting open ADB ports. Small models don’t currently add much that matters on these targets. The bottleneck has never been figuring out the device. It’s the huge number of devices that ship with open ports, default passwords, and no patching. Traditional worms already exploit that at scale. A practical attacker would use the best models available offline to design a better traditional worm, then ship the lean binary. You get the intelligence benefit at design time without dragging a slow, heavy model along with every infection. Embedding a weak model in the payload is the worse option for anyone who actually wants the largest, fastest botnet. The timing of Anthropic’s latest scare campaign is hard to ignore. The day before, Brian Armstrong posted that Coinbase fine-tuned an open-weight small model (Qwen-3.5-9B) on proprietary fraud data. It beat frontier models, including Anthropic’s own Opus 4.5, while being faster and much cheaper. In testing it cut fraudulent transactions by about 30%. This is the emerging pattern. For narrow enterprise workloads you don’t need a general superintelligence. You need a small specialist model trained on your own data. Cheaper to run, especially as compute gets tighter, and often better on the metric that matters. That is a direct threat to the frontier-company model of selling access to ever-larger general models. Safety advocates should be welcoming this development. If the real concern is existential risk from ever-larger frontier systems — the ones that could theoretically do sustained autonomous R&D or become hard to control — then a shift toward smaller specialized models is the safer outcome. Small models specialized on fraud detection or support tickets are not pushing the frontier. They are not in the category of systems that could become a new species. The theoretical loss-of-control risk is created by models getting bigger and more generally capable. Safety advocates focused on those risks should welcome companies having a cheaper alternative to constantly scaling general models. Instead we get dramatic warnings about small models at the exact moment they are starting to take real enterprise share from closed-model companies like Anthropic.

That's a wealth tax on unrealized gains. They don't pay you back the tax... Now picture this. Your mom calls you crying. She has to sell the house she raised you in. Not because she can't afford it. She's lived there 30 years. It's paid off. But some website says it's worth more now and the government says she owes $15,000 she doesn't have. So she sells your childhood home. The kitchen where she made you breakfast. The doorframe where she marked your height every birthday. Gone. To pay a tax on money that was never real. Now picture the opposite. Your dad put everything into his small business. For 20 years he built it from nothing. One year the business is "valued" at $2 million on paper. He owes a massive tax bill. He empties his savings. Sells his truck. Borrows money. Pays it. Next year the market crashes. His business is worth $200,000. He lost everything to pay a tax on a number that doesn't exist anymore. Does the government give him his money back? No. Does the government give him his truck back? No. Does the government care? No. They sold this idea as "taxing billionaires." But billionaires have armies of lawyers, offshore accounts, and trusts. They'll be fine. You know who won't be fine? Your mom. Your dad. Your neighbor with a small business. The farmer down the road who's had the same land for four generations and now has to sell it because dirt got expensive. You're not taxing wealth. You're taxing people for owning things. It's like getting a parking ticket for a car you might drive somewhere someday. They want you to own nothing and be happy. To fund the fraud, waste and abuse of the welfare state they created. There is enough money. More tax isn't needed. It's all a lie. But you've been gaslit into believing this is a rich vs poor debate. I hope you understand what's at stake.

I should have added to this essay that Scott's book/memoir "How to Fail" is very good. It's one of those books that has the potential to knock you out of your habitual and mediocrity-producing thinking-patterns. I especially appreciate the fact that Scott was a very "ordinary" American in many ways. So the lessons he learned on his path to success are especially useful for regular people with typical backgrounds working normal jobs––as opposed to most memoirs, which tell the exceptional, Hollywood-worthy stories that entertain us the most, but give us the least actionable advice.

2026 is almost unimaginable to those of us who had "time in the wilderness." It's a completely better world. Yet we never win. There's no tidy ending. The prize for winning is we get to fight again. Which is better than being slaughtered. That's for sure.

Remember the names of every Republican member of Congress who votes no today against defunding the National Endowment for Democracy. That list of names is your primary-the-shit-out-of-them map for 2026.

Scott Adams never lost the ability to surprise me with his ideas and observations. He could comment on the same event or situation everyone else was looking at and reveal a new angle or a whole new world. My brain grew every time I heard his voice. What a loss. What a figure.

Hard for people to appreciate how much money Scott Adams lost. He was living the dream. Dilbert cash. VC deal flow. Cash flow like crazy for speaking gigs where big companies fly you first class, pay you big checks for a lunchtime time. He lost that, and gained being a legend.

The world lost a great man today. I remember seeing Dilbert comic strips as a kid growing up in Saudi Arabia. Little did I know that decades later, I'd get the chance to hang out with its creator and interview him several times. Scott was always gracious and kind to me. Even approaching death, he remained a fighter and tried to be useful until the end. He didn't give up. Millions of people around the world have been positively impacted by his work and I'm grateful to be one of them. What a brilliant mind. Thank you @ScottAdamsSays! May you rest in perfect peace. 🙏🏾

Scott Adams broke new ground in death. Recording his show to his last breath he did something remarkable. He invited those who loved him into his sitting room, shepherded them through their grief, prepared them for his inevitable death, and without hiding any of the ravages of the disease that took him. He somehow did it all with remarkable dignity and stoicism. Just days ago he laughed through the pain as guests lined up to spend time with him. It was remarkable to observe. No hint of a man putting affairs in order, or seeking last minute reassurances or plaudits. Rather, it was like a father comforting his children. To document his decline and death, his human interactions and giving closure to those he knew would need it the most, he did the impossible - he made dying on livestream noble. A remarkable end to an already remarkable life.

@BostonGlobe Boston Globe, the creator of dogshit who veered into slanderous purpled-colored vomit and bile, has died as a credible news outlet.

Scott Adams could have kept his mouth shut in 2015, kept those lavish corporate speaking gigs where he'd earn 50-100K per talk, and have died with an extra zero or two in his bank account. Instead he chose courage and died surrounded by the love of tens-of-millions.

At the beginning of the Black Lives Matter bullshit in 2020, I mentioned that the left doesn’t want to abolish prisons or police. They want to be the prison wardens and the police. They want to lock up their enemies & liberate their friends. That hasn’t changed.
