She Didn’t Try to Sound Like Fleetwood Mac
What makes this clip worth watching is not the idea that Dolores O’Riordan sang “Go Your Own Way” better than Fleetwood Mac. A good cover does not have to beat the original. It only has to make you hear a familiar song through different ears.
“Go Your Own Way” is so closely tied to Lindsey Buckingham and Fleetwood Mac that it is difficult to separate the song from their version. Released in 1977, it carries tension beneath its catchy melody. Buckingham sounds like someone still caught in the middle of a breakup, still angry, still trying to push someone away while clearly not being finished with the story.
Dolores O’Riordan enters that song from a completely different place.
The first thing that changes is the voice. Her sound is lighter and more fragile, but there is always a rough edge underneath it. She does not try to make the song bigger. Instead, she brings it closer. The emotion feels less like an argument and more like something being quietly lived through.
That changes the way the familiar words land.
With Buckingham, the song can feel like someone telling another person to leave. With Dolores, there is a different kind of sadness. It sounds more like someone trying to accept that the other person may actually go, even though part of her is not ready for it.
That is the most interesting thing about her version.
She does not completely remake “Go Your Own Way.” The melody is still there. The identity of the song is still recognizable. But the emotional temperature has changed. The anger becomes softer. The distance feels more personal. The song seems less concerned with winning an argument and more concerned with what remains after the argument is over.
Dolores had a voice that was difficult to polish into something generic. There was a slight tremble in it, a little rasp, and an almost childlike vulnerability that could suddenly turn sharp. She did not always sound perfectly smooth, and that was part of what made her so compelling. You could hear the person behind the voice.
That quality works surprisingly well with this song.
“Go Your Own Way” is ultimately about separation, and Dolores makes the separation feel less like a command and more like a wound. The words stay the same, but the person saying them has changed. That is enough to make the listener reconsider lines they may have heard hundreds of times.
And that is what a memorable cover should do.
It should not erase the original. It should give the song another life beside it.
Fleetwood Mac gave “Go Your Own Way” one identity. Dolores O’Riordan gave it another—not by trying to sound like the people who came before her, but by allowing her own voice, with all its roughness and vulnerability, to sit inside the song.
That is why the performance stays with you.
You already know the song.
But for a few minutes, it sounds as though you are hearing it for the first time.
