Watching a mediocre and injury-depleted Atlanta team bolster itself with cheap OF pickups at the trade deadline and march within a game of the World Series has made me grumpy this AM that is all.
I'm mildly encouraged to see the M's linked to big name FA already. They should be. But I'm still so wary that this team has the flexibility and creativity to pull off creating a real winner without a lot of good fortune, even if they land some premium guys. We'll see!
Anyway not to re-litigate too hard but what burned about this trade deadline wasn't *just* the hilariously bad optics of the Graveman/Toro trade and Jerry's predictably mealy-mouthed response to it, it's that they could have actually made the team better with minimal effort.
@nathan_h_b What’s teeth-gnashingly annoying is that it was very obvious in the 2020-2021 offseason that a fairly priced corner OF bat could be fit in somewhere without really blocking anyone (and even if you got a logjam, I hear Jerry likes to make trades).
@nathan_h_b It wouldn’t have blown up the budget for 2021-2022, and it would have saved us from seeing a bunch of AAA roster filler wear M’s uniforms (and lose some games we didn’t have to lose).
@nathan_h_b This is why Pete Carroll endeared himself to me the first year he was here as Seahawks coach. Could have easily just taken a bunch of Ls and won 3-5 games and been fine. Instead we got surprise playoffs and Beastquake because they worked their butts off for wins.
@robtaylor231 yeah I love Pete for similar reasons, even when it's pretty clear his time is running out here.
