Halfway through her pregnancy, a young mother learned the baby boy growing inside her would not survive outside her womb. She carried him for another four months knowing that for as long as he remained inside her, she could keep him safe. Peter James Raridon was born September 11th. His mom Anna and dad Eli, a rookie tight end for the New England Patriots, learned during their 20-week anatomy scan that Peter had anencephaly, a fatal condition affecting development of the brain and skull. Instead of preparing to bring their first baby home, they spent the remainder of the pregnancy loving him while knowing their time together would likely be painfully short. Anna says she is grateful she got to love Peter, protect him and be his home for nine months. Then she wrote the words that absolutely broke my heart: “I have loved you every second of your life & will miss you every second of mine.” Anna and Eli are leaning heavily on their faith, believing their son’s life had meaning regardless of how brief it was and that their goodbye is not forever. One of the images they shared shows Peter’s tiny footprints inside a Bible. A reminder that this little boy was here, he was deeply loved, and he will always be their son. Please pray for these young parents and for every mother and father who understands the heartbreak of loving a baby they never got to bring home.

What USA Today did to this women is completely unethical. It reminds me of what the NY Times did to me when I was a correspondent at “60 Minutes” and I had an off-the-record conversation with one of their journalists. Comments I had made to him then appeared in other articles written by other journalists & published in other news outlets. They were taken out of context & mis-used in order to convey legitimacy to false reporting that had one purpose only: destroy me & end my career. They failed to do either, but I have never forgotten how dishonest & vicious they were all were. I wish them nothing but pain & suffering but I know that is wrong so I pray for forgiveness & leave it to God. I know I am just one of so many who have been treated this way by so-called journalists who have not one ounce of integrity or moral courage. This is why people think so little of the media today. We have done it to ourselves. The problem is those encouraging journalists to abandon their principles & wage information war for them do so knowing they benefit most from wiping out real journalism & destroying its credibility. So we continue to fight for the truth. And fight for those brave enough to search for it in a world where dirty tactics & deceit are rewarded while honesty & integrity are punished. I wrote the Ten Commandments of Real Journalism so that people can see what journalism is supposed to be: 1) Journalists are not lawyers in a court of law trying to prove a case or activists campaigning for a cause. Our job is to seek the truth no matter what and follow the facts wherever they lead us regardless of political outcomes or consequences. 2) It is not the role of a journalist to decide what people should think. Our duty is to search for the whole truth and communicate accurately and honestly so the audience or reader can make up their own mind. 3) Thou shalt not mislead, deceive or lie…to yourself or to the public. 4) Question everything. Only the truth stands up to questioning. 5) Two first-hand sources are the holy grail - always better than indirect or single bsources. 6) Be as skeptical of those you like and agree with as you are of those you neither like nor trust. 7) Opinion and analysis have a worthy place in journalism but are not fact and should not be presented as such. 8) Never underestimate the audience. People are not dumb - despite what many in the media think and lack of familiarity with a subject should not be confused with stupidity. 9) Be honest with yourself and aware of your own bias. No one is immune. 10) Anonymity has an important place in protecting sources for valid reasons. It should not be used as cover for political, corrupt or nefarious purposes and it is up to us to be the guardians of our craft.

I first met Charlie Kirk more than ten years ago. At that time, he was very young, and possessed an evangelical naivety that was relatively foreign to a Canadian. He was truly and somewhat amusingly shocked, for example, at the pervasive smell of marijuana on the streets of Toronto. It was obvious, however—despite that sheltered mien—that Charlie was someone deeply and singularly committed to a unique mission, and that he would be driven to learn everything necessary to its success. I met him in person another dozen times after that, and was asked to speak at a number of Turning Point events. I enjoyed the events. It was a very good thing to see thousands of enthusiastic young people trying to make things better in their somehow endearing conservative American way. It was also fascinating to watch Charlie develop in sophistication over the years. The bravery he showed in presenting a truly conservative viewpoint on university campuses was part of that development, as was the ferocious skill he developed at debating contentious issues, under trying conditions, for years. My wife, Tammy, and I met his lovely wife Erika with him on several private dinners. They made a truly admirable and mutually respectful couple. We had plans to make such meetings a regular occurrence—but life, and death, got in the way. I was not informed about Charlie's murder for several months after it occurred, in consequence of my recent illness. It came as a terrible shock. It is also truly awful to see what a spectacle has been made of his demise by pathological actors across the political spectrum. He was a solid, decent, hard-working, truthful, brave person. We are all—right and left alike—lesser without him. On the right: because he was an example and a leader. On the left: because he would willingly talk across the aisle, and in good faith. There will come a day—and too soon, I am afraid—when even those who vilify his memory will long for the days when people such as Charlie existed, and made such civilized talk a priority. Flock cameras are just another step towards a security state. And frankly, I am rather disgusted by so many "conservative" influencers coming out in support of them. Huxley’s Brave New World imagined a society in which technological control became so normalized that people ceased to recognize it as control at all. Brave New Flock has an added irony: some of the loudest defenders of a privately operated, nationwide surveillance infrastructure now call themselves conservatives. There is nothing conservative about teaching Americans to accept ubiquitous cameras, centralized databases, automated tracking, and the routine recording of innocent people’s movements simply because the technology is sold under the banner of fighting crime. A conservative instinct once began with suspicion of concentrated power, especially the power to watch citizens who had done nothing wrong. Apparently, for a new class of “conservative” influencer, that principle is negotiable.
