I read this recently, I appreciated it. I'm a big fan of articles like this that break down a core social science concept in a way that's a) clear and b) broadly useful. I think sociologists of science & medicine would benefit from thinking about legitimacy more carefully.

Current stage of working on my dissertation proposal: I'm looking back over some central texts in the body of literature I plan to contribute to, and even though they initially seemed unremarkable and obvious when I read them for my field exams, they now seem profound, somehow?

Yes, this is my sense. I haven't done the kind of discourse analysis needed to more firmly back up this particular claim, so in the final version I talk about this more as a hypothetical possibility that flows from the conceptual distinctions I lay out.
