Mohsen Namjoo returned to Iran without his wife’s knowledge and, it appears, against her wishes. It is a heartbreaking video because it captures one of the fundamental ruptures amongst Iranians - the divide btwn those who need home & those who need more
Walden Bello was one of the distinguished signatories of the letter to Iranian political prisoners that has generated controversy. His response to that controversy here is spot-on.
How are those facts? That is 1 fact (Mumia Abu-Jamal didn't consent), 1 half fact (Robin Kelley retracted - but who are the "several others?" , and then multiple questions. Get a copy of the original letter @vijayprashad. Until then, you are running your own campaign to discredit the letter and the signatories.

They have addressed the letter TO Iranian prisoners. Are you so focused on your own Western position that you cannot see that for Iranian prisoners - 950+ of whom have been executed since january w no judicial process - it IS the Islamic Republic of Iran that is the "greater" threat?

If we are abolitionists, we are abolitionists. There is no "ok well a little carceral situation over here is justifiable bc its not as bad as the US's." I am proud of all these comrades for their moral consistency and holding space for the perspective of IRANIAN PRISONERS and the violence they face from BOTH a violent authoritarian police state (the Islamic Republic of Iran) AND from the US and Israel. The Islamic Republic of Iran is NOT anti-imperialist. Its just anti-West. Thats just not the same thing. Its against Western imperialism and totally continues to exert and promote its own imperialist practices.

صادقانه که بخوام به قضیه نگاه کنم اون دسته از اطرافیانم که «نه به جنگ» هستن همشون متعلق به بخشی از جامعه ایران بودن که واقعا جنگ براشون از ادامه جمهوری اسلامی بدتره نه لزوما چون وصل به نظام هستن، صرفا جزو قشری بودن که خانوادشون استاندارد زندگی خوبی حتی تو سالای آخر جمهوری اسلامی داشته و یجورایی جمهوری اسلامی «براشون کار میکرده». اینقدری از بطن جامعه دور بودن که خیلی درکی که ندارن زندگی واسه اکثر مردم چقدر تحمل‌ناپذیر بوده. (منظورم فقط پول نیست، صرف «پایتخت‌نشین» بودن خودش یک مرحله آدما رو از واقعیت دورتر کرده و «بالاشهر»نشین بودن یک مرحله بیشتر) ولی از اونور چون جنگ ذاتا آسیب برابر‌تری رو برای همه ایجاد کرده، شرایط جنگی واقعا به استاندارد زندگیشون آسیب بیشتری میزنه و درد ملموس‌تری هست براشون تا ادامه نظام حاکم. این‌هم که بعد قطعی اینترنت فضای مجازی بیشتر به سمت ضد جنگ کشیده شده برای اینه که ذاتا درصد این گروه توی قشر خارج‌نشین بیشتر از داخل ایرانه چون واضحا اپلای و مهاجرت… پروسه‌ای هست که privilege خیلی بهش کمک میکنه. با وجود درک این حقیقت، چیزی که این وسط منو ناراحت میکنه «نداشتن احساس هم‌دردی» آدماست. اینکه کسی ورای حباب خانواده و دوستاش رو نبینه آدم رو ازشون نه تنها نا‌امید میکنه، بلکه در یک سطحی میترسونه.
