Our premier of Alberta just blocked renewable energy projects for 7 months. Western Canada BURNS because of a LACK of renewable energy. This is true madness and insanity, Danielle Smith! You are apparently very DEEP in big oil’s pockets.
In secondary school around 1990 I heard a talk about how the WHO predicted that climate change is an emergency on par with the threat of nuclear war. I suppose that in both scenarios the World burns. We’re experiencing one of them anyway: Western Canada burns
Since 20 years ago after SARS-CoV1 in 2003 virologists be like, hey World, this is a huge population of coronaviruses circulating in bats throughout China with huge pandemic potential. Neocons after SARS round 2= it was a lab leak!!! SMH

When conservatives are done destroying education and well quality of life in general they want a board seat in big oil/business. It’s just about scratching backs, not governance

Notwithstanding clause = screw your rights
Using the notwithstanding clause in Canada is tyranny
Notwithstanding taxes, I’m going to stop paying my taxes. My own ‘notwithstanding’ clause. Hey so now it’s legal!
‘Notwithstanding’ should be replaced with “in spite of” to accurately portray what they are doing to your rights in Canada
Notwithstanding, the Canadian politician’s magic word to violate Canadian rights
I keep coming back to Fermi’s paradox: So where are they?
I think we’d treat life with much greater value if we realized just how remarkably rare it is in the Universe
We live in an exceedingly rare gentle part of the galaxy. It took 13.8 billion years for us to come this far in our state of civilization and we think the galaxy is teeming with intelligent life? Nope.
Overturning Roe v Wade feels like an act of incels; It’s so terribly misogynistic.
Watching Indiana Jones and Kingdom of Crystal Skull after work + Beer and corn Chips. Love this movie. Haters gonna hate.
Doing research for a friend: if you play Minecraft with your son on LAN and they accidentally strike your character but you then strike their character in retribution, Is that child abuse? Research, friend, Not me.
I was Dadding today, “I’m not throwing this away, there’s half (an eaten) sandwich in here. This is perfectly good food. Any takers? No? Well, Don’t mind if I do.”
When you shovel your home regularly and the neighborhood skate rink is covered in a foot of snow. I be like, ‘step aside, I got this, gimme 20 min.’ Heh. ;)
I got mild myocarditis from SARS CoV2 INFECTION; cardiac MRI diagnosis. Got my MODERNA vaccines and symptoms disappeared. Lesson learned: Infection is FAR more dangerous than a vaccine. Vaccines protect.
It reinstalls my faith in the UofA student body when only 5 students show up to an anti-vax protest

@stuartjdneil @RutgersU Dealing with my own Covid denier. They do it surreptitiously. Real cowards. Gain traction with University leadership by saying they are alumni and “supporter” of the University. Eh Mr Kassian?
Very cool graphic from @PeterHotez showing the relative risks of measles infection vs the measles vaccine to kids.
@CartlandDavid That is not correct. This is the cycle threshold for selection of samples for full virus genome sequencing.
At 2 AM on December 25, 2021, I couldn’t sleep. I called my partner: "I'm quitting my post-doc." "Are you sure?" he asked. I could tell he was surprised - surprised that I would walk away from a career in which I had devoted much of my life. For which I had sacrificed so much.…

@MarionKoopmans It's one of the reasons the academies exist - to protect science and promote the value of science to society. Of course, the minute an organization speaks up, it's subjected to the same exhausting attacks that their members are being put through.
We stand behind Academy Fellow Professor @edwardcholmes and his rigorous approach to scientific inquiry. He’s spent decades working on virus evolution. His research has been instrumental in the fight against COVID-19 and he’s now looking ahead to understand how we can help…
Determining pandemic origins are important for prevention, but if it’s “natural,” what can we do? I think this is part of the lab leak’s enduring appeal. It’s easy to stop lab leaks if you’re cool with just stopping virology research. Addressing zoonosis is a lot harder to do.
It’s not lost on me that these are species (foxes and raccoon dogs) that are also on the list of susceptible candidates in which SARS-CoV-2 could have spilled over into the human population. Mink farms have also been associated with both H5N1 and SARS-CoV-2 outbreaks/epizootics.
So suggesting that fur farm workers should use caution & maybe some PPE just because H5N1 isn’t efficiently transmitted between mammals is a poor approach. Sure it doesn’t transmit efficiently now. But that might not be true after further passage through mammals farmed for fur.
H5N1 & SARS-CoV-2 are very different, but they have this is common with all viruses: they exist solely to make more viruses, which they can’t do without a host. With enough “practice” infecting a given host, they can & will adapt. It is their biological imperative. Adapt or die.
You don’t need “gain-of-function” virology research to get a virus to expand its host range. What you need are circumstances where a lot of susceptible hosts are in close proximity and there are few barriers to transmission. Like a fur farm. Like the wildlife trade.
Good to see “ symptomless testing” in poultry workers in the UK when working with H5n1 infected birds. Larger scale studies like this will help guide risk assessments. news.sky.com/story/bird-flu…
A favorite talking point from the lab leakers is that it’s absurd and unlikely that SARS-CoV-2 would have the opportunity to adapt to species besides bats except in a lab. But humans give viruses opportunities to adapt all the time. cidrap.umn.edu/avian-influenz…
We have to pay to ski or hike in Kananaskis, fine. But rather than make these dudes pay a trail fee, the UCP gives $8M to quad/off-road groups so they can rip up the land. Got it… #Ableg #FireTheUCP #DanielleSmithIsUnfitToLead
