geralt saw it in the last town before kaer morhen, while buying supplies for his trek up the mountain. a worn little thing, nowhere near the beauty of jaskier's instrument. he had no idea what possessed him to buy it. but buy it he did.

jaskier wasn't with geralt this winter, having received an offer to work in oxenfurt that was too good to pass up. geralt missed him terribly, but at least it meant he wasn't there to make fun of or constantly needle geralt about his purchase.

the lute stayed strapped to roach's side for the entire trek up the mountain, and geralt snuck it into his room when none of his fellow witchers were looking. a futile task, really, since they would /hear/ it eventually, but geralt was not ready for questions yet.

it was three days after his arrival, right after lambert had arrived with aiden and whisked him away, that geralt first brought out the lute and stole away to the tallest tower in kaer morhen. he took the deepest of deep breath, arranged his fingers, and played a single note.

it may not have looked like geralt payed attention whenever jaskier told him about his lute (or talked AT him, really, sometimes just knowing when geralt needed to hear the sound of his voice), but he had. every time. and so whenever geralt had a free moment, he practiced.

and practiced. his fellow witchers could hear him, of course they could, but at least they didn't interrupt. his immediately poor playing annoyed them to no end, and lambert of course bugged him about it. but geralt just grunted, and eskel growled, and that was that.

it still annoyed the other witchers, though, but they were not geralt's concern. every time he had a spare moment, he practiced. each note, one at a time, then one after another, and eventually even melodies. by the end of the winter, geralt was actually pretty decent.

geralt and jaskier had planned how and where to meet up at the end of the winter, but like everything with the two of them, it never worked out how they planned. jaskier stumbled into the inn, soaked wet through. he could hear the faint strummings of a song, coming from above.

jaskier just had time for a quick "thanks" as he skipped away from the bar after asking about the room, heading up the stairs. he was many days early, he knew, but it appeared so was geralt. jaskier didn't even bother knocking when he entered, knowing geralt would've heard him.
