It is okay to pay an entry-level coach an entry-level wage. However, no one earning $30-35,000 should be expected to stay forever. A coach should not be made to feel or look like the bad guy if and when he decides to move on to a better opportunity. Want loyalty? Pay for it.

We pay employees to attend games. While there, they interact with parents and make sure athletes know we care about them outside of our gym. Strategically allocated marketing dollars don’t need to be exclusively limited to Facebook and Google ad spends.

Your gym will at best maintain the status quo if you surround yourself with yes-men coaches who stroke your ego and feed you insights they think you want to hear. Instead, assemble a team of truth-tellers who will tell you an idea is stupid when they know it to be true.

Fitness is best kept simple. Lift heavy things. Occasionally sprint. And try to walk briskly everyday. Stick to the fundamentals: Use progressive resistance. Practice what you want to get good at. Consistency before intensity. Intensity before everything else.

For fitness: lift heavy, sprint, stretch, and walk. Use progressive overload. For nutrition: focus on protein, water, and veggies. Limit sweets, snacking, and alcohol. If you want success, then spend more time on the basics than anything. Simplicity is a powerful tool.

It’s easier to mess up something that’s working than it is to genuinely improve it. Coaches who attend a fascinating seminar over the weekend and quickly begin designing increasingly complex programming often need to be reminded that time in doesn’t always equal benefits out.

Lift weights 3-5x/week. Sometimes sprint. Walk everyday. Keep a log of what you eat and focus on protein. Go to bed on time. Don’t stare into your phone all day. Say your please and thank yous. It’s a commitment to the basics that will solve a lot of life’s problems.
