Pakistan has lost a man whose legacy lies deep beneath its soil. Tariq Majeed Jaswal led exploration at OGDCL & Pakistan Oil fields through remarkable periods of discovery. His internationally recognised research helped decode some of Pakistan’s most complex petroleum geology. But perhaps his greatest legacy is yet to unfold. The wells he helped discover produced energy and the research he published produced knowledge. And the exploration roadmap he has left behind may produce discoveries for years to come. Few professionals leave their signature beneath the soil of their country. Tariq Majeed Jaswal did. May his knowledge and service become Sadaqah-e-Jariyah and may his soul rest in peace. Ameen.

📍 Tomb of Salahuddin, next to the Umayyad Mosque, Damascus, Syria. This is the resting place of Salahuddin al-Ayyubi — Salah al-Din Yusuf ibn Ayyub — the Kurdish general who founded the Ayyubid dynasty and became the first Sultan of Egypt and Syria in 1174 CE. Born in Tikrit in 1137 CE, he rose through the ranks under his uncle Shirkuh, a commander for the Zengid ruler Nur al-Din, and was made vizier of Egypt on Shirkuh's death in 1169. He went on to abolish the Fatimid Caliphate and unify Egypt, Syria, the Hejaz, Yemen and Upper Mesopotamia under Sunni rule — assembling the power base from which he confronted the Crusader states. Achievements: ⚔️ Crushed the Crusader army at the Battle of Hattin (1187) 🕌 Recaptured Jerusalem the same year, ending 88 years of Crusader rule — and did so without the massacre that marked its fall to the Crusaders in 1099 🛡️ Held the line against Richard the Lionheart through the Third Crusade 🏰 Began construction of the Cairo Citadel Personality: Even hostile Christian chroniclers of his own era wrote of his mercy toward captives, his restraint, and his generosity — a reputation for justice that reached across the conflict lines and outlived him on both sides. Death: He fell ill with a fever not long after Richard's crusade ended in truce, and died in Damascus on 27 Safar 589 AH (4 March 1193 CE), aged 55. At his death, his treasury held only a single dinar and forty-seven dirhams — he had given away the rest in charity. He was first buried in the Citadel of Damascus; his son al-Malik al-Afdal later moved his remains to the mausoleum beside the Umayyad Mosque, where he still lies today.
