Unfortunately, the world is full of suffering and sadly far too many people endure pain on a daily basis due to illness or injury, usually through no fault of their own. It’s different with athletes who tend to live by the mantra of “no pain, no gain”. Most pain is therefore self-inflicted due to pushing the limits and the exploration of their physical boundaries. It’s therefore not surprising that injuries are both unavoidable and a constant part of sport. And as everyone who suffers pain will know, the continual discomfort is both tiring and mentally draining. But unlike most people, athletes have the luxury to choose to limit or even stop the pain. Because they can leave sport and live a different life where pushing their bodies to the limit is not a requirement. Former world and #Olympic champion Carolina Marin reasoned her retirement on her desire to live pain free rather than focus on further #badminton goals. And a back injury forced 2-time #OlympicChampion Viktor Axelsen to admit his body simply couldn’t cope with the amount of training required to play at the top level. While both Marin and Axelsen were in their 30s when they retired, earlier this week (when WR4 in the women’s doubles with Jia Yi Fan) Zhang Shu Xian was removed from the world ranking, indicating her retirement at the tender age of just 26, due, I understand, to her chronic back injury. Zhang has played with a back support ever since she first emerged onto the world stage. Despite carrying a continuous injury, she reached a career high ranking of 2 with both Zheng Yu and Jia Yi Fan and won 10 #WorldTour titles with 4 different partners. I don’t know whether Zhang has reached the limit (either physically or mentally) of her pain tolerance, or whether she feels her body can’t cope with the training required to become an even better player, but she obviously feels she simply can’t, or doesn’t want to go on due to her ongoing back issue. It’s always sad to see talented youngsters forced into retirement due to injury, but new beginnings are often disguised as painful endings.
