That is why theories such as evolution, relativity, and quantum mechanics are among the most important achievements in science. They do more than explain individual phenomena. They bring together enormous amounts of evidence and knowledge into coherent frameworks that help us understand how the universe works.
Scientific ideas usually do not begin as theories. Scientists start by making observations and developing hypotheses to explain what they see. They then test those hypotheses repeatedly through experiments and further observations. When an explanation makes accurate predictions and continues to hold up under testing over many years, it can become part of a well-established scientific theory.
In everyday language, the word “theory” often means a guess or an idea that has not been proven.
In science, however, the word has a very different meaning.
In 2014, actress Gwyneth Paltrow said that a regular 9-to-5 office job was easier than acting.
She explained that a regular job comes with a routine. You wake up in the morning, get everything ready, go to work, and come home in the evening.
Filming a movie is completely different.
You might be told to travel to Wisconsin for two weeks and work 14 hours a day.
You might not even be able to take your children to school.
A routine arrest for driving under the influence ended with a woman suffering severe facial injuries.
Security cameras captured the officer forcefully pushing the woman into a jail cell. The push sent her forward, causing her face to slam into a concrete bench.
The impact caused multiple facial fractures and the loss of several teeth.
Doctors had to implant a titanium plate in her cheek to reconstruct her face. She also permanently lost her vision in one eye.
The woman was awarded $875,000 in compensation.
She had not resisted or fought back. One push sent her face into a concrete bench, changing her life in a single second.
President Trump fired Katie Zacharia from the White House after just five days in the job.
That would make her the shortest-serving White House press secretary in history.
Her first press briefing on Tuesday faced widespread criticism.
Then a bigger problem emerged.
Zacharia had presented herself as an attorney. She later admitted that she had failed the bar exam, sparking major questions about her qualifications.
Trump told reporters that he had asked her to reconsider the position. He also said the media had treated her very harshly, describing the treatment as “brutal.”
For comparison, Anthony Scaramucci lasted 11 days as White House communications director in 2017.
Zacharia lasted less than half that time.
The White House press secretary job is one of the toughest roles in politics. Every word is scrutinized, and every detail of a person's background can come under examination.
But are five days enough to judge someone’s performance?
Or was the bigger failure in the vetting process before the appointment?
