Mac tip: “Purgeable” space isn’t free space yet. macOS only clears it when something needs the room, and often a big chunk of it is Time Machine local snapshots.
To see them: tmutil listlocalsnapshots /
If your Mac says it’s full while Purgeable is huge, that’s usually why.
@FSAPOJake Usually Time Machine local snapshots (sudo tmutil deletelocalsnapshots <date>) or old iPhone backups in ~/Library/Application Support/MobileSync/Backup. Docker and Xcode can add a lot too. I'm building a Mac app that breaks System Data down item by item: siftmac.com
@nicolasmelo System Data is mostly Time Machine local snapshots (tmutil listlocalsnapshots /), old iPhone backups (Finder › your iPhone › Manage Backups) and app caches. macOS just never says which. I built an app that shows exactly that, free to try: siftmac.com
@adambader Before upgrading, check the dev caches: Xcode DerivedData and old simulators (xcrun simctl delete unavailable), old node_modules (npx npkill), Docker (docker system df), Ollama and Hugging Face models. I build a Mac cleaner for exactly this: siftmac.com
Meet SiftMac, the disk cleaner for Mac that explains itself.
Every item gets a verdict: does it come back on its own, or is it yours?
Anything you remove waits 7 days on the Undo Shelf.
Nothing leaves your Mac.
