old book but remains a CLASSIC! was going through the structure and content of provisions on local government, so much of detailed scholarly work in just 250 pages. anyone wants to have a ringside views of law politics and policies within that domain, it’s a good book to start.
My essay with @Kumar_EconIneq in @TheIndiaForum on the latest official statistics by the Indian government & what they seem to imply about the current extent of extreme poverty in India theindiaforum.in/economy/povert… @LSEEcon @STICERD_LSE
Happy birthday to Albert Hirschman, who would be 109 today. Hirschman—anti-fascist, resistance hero, later a development economist—may be the most interesting person to ever take up the profession. 🧵 and blog post on his remarkable life and work.
Why do we dislike inflation? 🚨New paper for @BrookingsInst revisits this long-standing question, already asked by @RobertJShiller in 1997, with current data and survey methods. Some key findings:🧵 1/10 socialeconomicslab.org/research/worki…

1/The 2 final @Bachelor_X debates were on “Are Economic Agents Rational?” so here’s a thread on how economists have defined rationality across 20th century. Focus is on 2 debates: status of expected utility theory (EUT) in 50s & of Kahneman & Tversky’s results in 70s to 90s
An essay by @R_Thaler and yours truly on Danny Kahneman and Amos Tversky, his greatest collaborator. newyorker.com/books/page-tur…
My (earlier) Conversation with the great Daniel Kahneman: conversationswithtyler.com/episodes/danie…, RIP
Today we’ve lost a giant and a visionary: Prof. Daniel Kahneman has passed at the age of 90. The Princeton SPIA community shares our condolences with his family and all who knew him, learned from him, and loved him. bit.ly/4cy0arM
I was so lucky to be able to have Danny Kahneman as a best friend and collaborator for decades. He usually ended our conversations with "to be continued..." but I now have to simulate his part which is impossible. My favorite image of us "working".
Kahneman and Tversky proposed a theory of choice that was psychologically plausible and mathematically precise. They showed that a better kind of theory was possible. Rest in peace, Danny Kahneman.
Daniel Kahneman, a psychologist whose work casting doubt on the rationality of decision-making helped spawn the field of behavioral economics and won him a Nobel Prize, has died. He was 90. trib.al/YDjlHid
🚨 forthcoming @The_JOP: super excited that the 1st paper on project with @AlyssaRHeinze & @BruleRachel is now accepted. We show that inequality does not stop at the gate of political office: Indian women face large inequalities in voice & centrality AFTER they reach office 1/n
@sethposting @swarajk_ she was more sceptical but the recent editorial by Rangarajan and Mahendra Dev, they were more sober in their tone. poverty has been reduced substantially. however CPI basket has to be revisited because non vegetable intake has been improved and vegetables intake has been reduced
Delighted to share that my book: "Accelerating India's Development" will release on 28 March 2024. Pre-order at: amazon.in/dp/067009594X It has been a labour of love over nearly 5 years, and synthesizes over 20 years of work. I hope you enjoy it!
@JMorduch and I have a brand new draft of our poverty paper. TLDR: Poverty rates in developing countries are generally not the proportion of households that are poor for the year. Instead, they are the proportion of the year households are poor. joshmerfeld.github.io/assets/papers/…
🆕 Reducing the size of administrative units improved local governments in India. Today on VoxDev, @vedanarasimhan @NYUAD_SocialSci @NYUAbuDhabi & @Jeff_Weaver_ @USC_Econ outline their research on the impacts of creating smaller local government polities: voxdev.org/topic/institut…

On Bill Lawry's birthday. A hard lesson that Bill had learnt from his partner in crime Richie Benaud while doing commentary for a domestic game was returned to Tony Greig many years later during a test match. Happy birthday Bill !

9) Seeing Like a State - James C. Scott Scott critiques top-down development projects, highlighting the importance of local knowledge and organic systems, offering insights into the limitations of centralized planning. Worth bearing in mind during policy design.
5) Mastering 'Metrics - Joshua Angrist and Jörn-Steffen Pischke An excellent and very readable introduction to econometric methods by 2 leaders in the field. Brilliant place to get the basics of the language and techniques used in empirical economics.
2) Development as Freedom - Amartya Sen A wonderful overview of Sen's policy views, definitely not just for developing countries. Book for instance covers: means testing, theory of democracy, and the capability approach.
