There’s an interesting pattern in technology leadership career progression where folks will move from a director-level role at a super big company to a VP role at a big-but-struggling company (or well-funded startup) only to go back as a VP or higher at a super big company.

This happened to me one time: 1. Added dynamic flow control to our FPS game's shaders: benchmark in our test lab, shows perf boost 2. Gfx coder who has the CEO's ear: "you can't do that, it's slower". Reply: "we benchmarked it, it's faster". 3. Months later test lab is dismantled
