You don't murder hostages if you want a hostage deal. All Hamas have ever demanded is concessions that legitimise hurting Jews for being Jews. For instance they are currently demanding the right to import weapons across the Egyptian border. For years they demanded concrete.

Specifically, when there is a massacre somewhere, there is a surge of sympathy in the West for the victims. The more brutal the massacre, the greater the surge. With Jews it's always the other way round. It's a weird effect. It happened before, during and after the Holocaust too.
