King Leopold II is not demonized like Hitler because his victims were Black Africans — and Black lives have never mattered to the people who built their wealth on our suffering. He killed over 20 million innocent Congolese, and oversaw a regime that amputated the hands of countless Africans. Leopold was even buried in a Catholic church. The Palestinian Authority is jailing Palestinian activist Ali Shraim, who has spoken out against Hamas terrorism and been repeatedly attacked by Hamas supporters in the West Bank. The charge? “Insulting high-ranking officials.” This is the same Palestinian Authority that keeps promising reform. Those promises mean nothing while it jails people for criticizing its officials.

I hate the fact that I am having to learn more and more about what genocide is, what constitutes a genocide, what are the legal definitions of it as well as the particulars of various historical genocides. This is a horrific and hellish topic to learn about.

When the Palestinian Flag Becomes Everyone’s Flag A few days ago, I was walking through Puerta del Sol in Madrid. Dozens of Spaniards had gathered there to protest the housing crisis. They had pitched tents, hung banners, and occupied part of the square. An elderly woman had been evicted from her home and later died. Her story had become a symbol of a crisis that had left many people wondering whether they would ever be able to afford a place to live. Among the tents, I noticed something familiar. The Palestinian flag was everywhere. I approached a group of young protesters and asked if I could photograph the flag hanging from their tent. I told them I was Palestinian, that I had come from Gaza. As we spoke, I realized they knew almost nothing about Palestine. They recognized the flag, but knew little about the country or the people it represented. I walked away with a question I could not easily answer. How had the flag of my country, a country these young people knew so little about, found its way into a protest over housing in Spain? In recent days, I have seen people celebrate the Palestinian flag’s appearance at demonstrations across the world. They call it a universal symbol of freedom, resistance, and solidarity. Others point to protests that have descended into riots or vandalism and use the presence of the flag to portray Palestinians as supporters of violence and disorder.
