If you're reading this as a fundamentalist or evangelical then let's both admit that our views of scripture and church history are not able to be entirely objective and are influenced by our culture, context, denomination and experience.

1/ It wasn’t in the conservative churches I have attended that I learned the creeds or Church history or about debates in the early church over Christology and heresies. It was in progressive spaces.

3. Dismissing people who are deconstructing even if they don’t end up retaining their faith as having never had genuine faith is severely lacking in that supposed grace and mercy.

There’s a video of Matt Chandler going round where he says: “If you have ever experienced the grace and mercy of Jesus Christ, that’s really impossible to deconstruct from.” There’s a couple of reasons why I find this to be wrong:

I am confident that one day being LGBTQ+ affirming and a Christian will be as morally obvious as being a Christian and condemning slavery. But until that day I will use my privilege and platform to advocate for the inclusion, love and acceptance of LGBTQ+ people in the Church.

There is an unspoken assumption about the role of police and the military in this tweet. It assumes that the purpose of American police is to use violence and kill to protect abstract political ideals such as “the 1st amendment” rather than to serve and protect PEOPLE.
